Course Overview

The Warwick International Foundation Programme (IFP) is run in-house by Warwick Foundation Studies on the main Coventry campus — not by a private pathway provider on a satellite site. Students are taught by Warwick staff, use Warwick's library, sports centre and Students' Union, and live in Warwick accommodation. There are three pathways: Science and Engineering; Social Sciences (which feeds Economics, Business, Politics, Sociology and Law); and Arts and Humanities. Each combines two or three subject modules with an extended academic project, quantitative skills, and academic English — the extended project in particular is what Warwick admissions tutors read when they judge whether you can handle a Warwick degree.

Warwick is a genuinely strong destination for the Sri Lankan students who come to us most often — Economics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering and Business. Warwick Business School and the Department of Economics are both top-5 in the UK, and the IFP is the recognised route in for students whose Sri Lankan GCE A/L profile does not map onto Warwick's direct-entry requirements. IFP students apply through UCAS and hold a conditional undergraduate offer at Warwick alongside their IFP place, so you know from the start exactly what grades you are working toward. Progression is conditional on hitting those grades — some departments (notably Economics, Mathematics and Computer Science) set demanding thresholds, and Medicine is not available via the IFP. A good IFP result is also accepted by other UK universities, so you are not locked in.

Entry Requirements

description

Academic

  • check_circle Sri Lankan GCE A/L: three passes with a good grade profile (typically B/C or above), or completion of Year 13 with strong results.
  • check_circle Science and Engineering pathway requires Mathematics at A/L plus a science; Social Sciences pathway requires Mathematics for the Economics and Business progression routes.
  • check_circle Cambridge / Edexcel AS or A Levels, or an unfinished IB Diploma, are also considered.
  • check_circle Minimum age 17 by the start of the programme.
  • check_circle Apply through UCAS naming both the IFP and your intended Warwick degree — you receive a conditional degree offer alongside the IFP offer.
  • check_circle Progression to a Warwick degree is conditional on meeting the specified IFP grades; Medicine and a small number of other courses are not available through this route.

English Proficiency

  • check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.0 Overall (min 5.5 in each component) for Science and Engineering.
  • check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 Overall (min 6.0 in each component) for Social Sciences and Arts and Humanities.
  • check_circle TOEFL iBT: 79 Overall (Science) / 92 Overall (Social Sciences and Humanities).
  • check_circle PTE Academic: 59 / 65 depending on pathway.
  • check_circle Warwick requires a recognised secure English test for IFP entry — English-medium schooling in Sri Lanka is not accepted on its own. Applicants slightly below the threshold can be offered a Warwick pre-sessional English course.

Career Outcomes & PR

The IFP's outcome is a Warwick undergraduate place, not a job. Most IFP graduates progress to Warwick degrees in Economics, Business, Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Law or the Social Sciences; Warwick's graduate employment record is among the UK's strongest, with heavy recruitment into consulting (McKinsey, Bain, Deloitte), banking (Goldman Sachs, HSBC, Barclays), and technology (Amazon, Bloomberg, Jane Street). After the degree you are eligible for the 2-year UK Graduate Route. Plan the finance for four years total (IFP plus a three-year degree), or five for MEng and integrated master's routes.
