Course Overview
Durham University's International Foundation Year (IFY) is delivered at the Durham University International Study Centre, on campus in Durham itself, with three pathways: Business, Economics and Accounting; Humanities, Social Sciences and Law; and Science and Engineering. The teaching mixes subject modules with academic English, research and referencing skills, and seminar practice — the last of these matters more than students expect, because Durham teaching leans hard on small-group tutorials where you are expected to argue a position rather than recite one.
The reason Sri Lankan students choose Durham's IFY over a generic pathway college is the progression structure. When you accept an IFY place you are given a conditional offer for a named Durham undergraduate degree up front, and progression is guaranteed provided you meet the specified grades and attendance requirements. That is a stronger commitment than most UK foundation routes offer, and it removes the worst uncertainty for a family committing four years of funding. Durham is a collegiate university — you are assigned to a college with its own dining hall, sports teams and pastoral team, which is genuinely useful for a student arriving alone from Colombo or Jaffna. Note the exclusions honestly: Medicine, Veterinary Science and a handful of the most competitive courses cannot be entered through the IFY, and Durham's Law and Economics progression grades are high.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle Sri Lankan GCE A/L: three passes with a reasonable grade profile, or successful completion of Year 13 — the IFY exists precisely because Sri Lankan local A/Ls do not give direct entry to Durham's Year 1.
- check_circle Science and Engineering pathway requires A/L Mathematics plus a science; Business and Economics requires A/L Mathematics.
- check_circle Cambridge / Edexcel AS Levels, an incomplete IB Diploma, or a local university foundation year are also accepted.
- check_circle Minimum age 17 at the start of the programme.
- check_circle Guaranteed progression to a named Durham undergraduate degree on meeting the specified IFY grades and attendance — the degree offer is issued when you accept the IFY place.
- check_circle Medicine, Veterinary Science and certain highly competitive courses are excluded from the IFY progression route.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 5.5 Overall (min 5.5 in Writing) for the 4-term extended IFY.
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.0 Overall (min 5.5 in each component) for the standard 3-term IFY.
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 72 to 80 Overall depending on pathway and term length.
- check_circle PTE Academic: 51 to 59 depending on pathway.
- check_circle A recognised English test is required — English-medium schooling in Sri Lanka does not replace it. Applicants below the threshold are placed on the 4-term extended IFY, which builds in an additional term of English rather than rejecting the application.

The IFY delivers a Durham undergraduate place, and Durham graduates are among the most heavily targeted in the UK — the university consistently ranks in the top handful of institutions UK employers recruit from, with strong pipelines into law (Clifford Chance, Linklaters), finance (Goldman Sachs, Rothschild, PwC), consulting and the Civil Service Fast Stream. After the degree you qualify for the 2-year UK Graduate Route. Sri Lankan families should budget four years in total (IFY plus a three-year degree) and treat the foundation year as the enabling investment rather than the outcome.
