Massey University
Course Overview
Massey University's Bachelor of Education (Primary) is delivered through the Institute of Education at the Manawatu (Palmerston North) and Albany (Auckland) campuses — one of New Zealand's longest-established teacher-education programmes and the only NZ institution offering primary teacher training across multiple campuses plus a distance pathway. The 3-year Bachelor of Teaching (BTeach Primary) is fully accredited by the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand — the regulator that issues full teacher registration (Tohu Aronga) on graduation. The curriculum covers Te Reo Maori (Maori language foundations — mandatory), New Zealand Curriculum literacy and numeracy pedagogy, child development, inclusive education, and three teaching practica (Year 1, Year 2, Year 3 — totalling 24+ weeks in partner primary schools).
Sri Lankan applicants from BEd / NIE Diploma in Teaching / BA Education backgrounds, or A-Level / IB direct entrants choose Massey for the combination of structured teacher-registration pathway, relatively low NZ tuition (LKR 5.9M/year), and clear Green List PR route. Primary School Teacher (ANZSCO 241213) appears on the NZ Green List — Tier 2 (Work to Residence) pathway, meaning teachers can apply for residence after 2 years of registered teaching in NZ. The Post-Study Work Visa gives 3 years of open work, which comfortably covers the registration and Green List residence runway. Starting NZ primary teacher salary NZD 60,000-75,000 (LKR 11.4M-14.25M/yr) on the national grid.

Career Outcomes & PR
Eligible for the Post-Study Work Visa — 3 years of open work rights for Level 7 Bachelor's graduates. Primary School Teacher (ANZSCO 241213) is on the NZ Green List Tier 2 — teachers qualify for the Work to Residence pathway after 2 years of registered teaching, leading to Permanent Residence. Massey BTeach graduates are placed across NZ Ministry of Education public primary schools, NZ Catholic Education schools, independent schools, plus Maori-medium kura and bilingual schools (for graduates with Te Reo Maori competence). Starting NZ teacher salary NZD 60,000-75,000 rising on the unified base salary grid to NZD 100,000+ at the top. Most graduates secure registered teaching positions within 6 months — NZ has structural teacher shortages, particularly in low-decile schools and outside main centres. Sri Lankan returnees route into senior teaching and admin roles at international schools (Colombo International School, Overseas School of Colombo, British School Colombo, Lyceum International, Asian International School, Elizabeth Moir, Stafford International, Wycherley, Royal Institute), Cambridge / Edexcel curriculum coordination, and into Sri Lankan NIE / Department of Education programmes.
