Bachelor of Education (Teaching) Primary
Te Herenga Waka — Victoria University of Wellington
Course Overview
Te Herenga Waka — Victoria University of Wellington's Bachelor of Education (Teaching) Primary is delivered through the Faculty of Education at the Karori campus and partner primary schools across Wellington. Victoria University is consistently ranked top-3 in New Zealand and top-250 globally (QS), and is one of New Zealand's three flagship teacher-education providers alongside Auckland and Massey. The 3-year programme combines university coursework (child development, curriculum theory, te ao Māori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi, English literacy, mathematics pedagogy, science teaching, arts integration, and inclusive education) with extended practicum placements totalling 24 weeks across Years 1, 2, and 3. On completion, graduates apply directly to the New Zealand Teaching Council for full registration — the qualifying credential to teach in any state-funded primary school in New Zealand.
Sri Lankan applicants choose Victoria Wellington Education over Auckland's 14-month accelerated MTeach because the 3-year Bachelor's pathway is significantly more affordable in total (NZD ~111,000 BEd vs NZD ~79,000 MTeach but with much lower 3-year living costs), and the Bachelor's-direct route suits applicants without an existing degree. Secondary AND primary school teaching are both on New Zealand's Green List (Tier 1) — straight-to-residence visa eligibility from the moment a graduate signs an offer with a NZ school. Wellington's lower cost of living vs Auckland (~25% cheaper for student rentals) plus active demand for primary teachers in the Wellington region makes this an exceptionally high-conversion route. Sri Lankan returnees route into senior teaching positions at Sri Lanka's leading international schools (Lyceum International, Stafford International, Asian International School, Royal Institute International, Belvoir College International, Elizabeth Moir School, Colombo International School) and into the National Institute of Education for curriculum-development roles.
