Course Overview
POSTECH's BSc in Mechanical Engineering is delivered through the Department of Mechanical Engineering — POSTECH (founded 1986 by POSCO, Korea's steel giant) is one of Asia's top research-intensive universities, consistently ranked top-100 globally (QS, US News, Shanghai) despite a deliberately small student body (~3,000 total students across all programmes). The 4-year programme covers thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, solid mechanics, mechatronics and robotics, manufacturing processes, materials science, control systems, and design. POSTECH's research is heavily integrated with POSCO Steel's R&D, the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory (one of only ~50 dedicated synchrotron facilities globally), and partnerships with Samsung Electronics, Hyundai Motor, LG Electronics, and SK Hynix. The university operates a 4-year full-residence campus model — all undergraduates live in on-campus housing throughout their degree.
Sri Lankan applicants choose POSTECH over KAIST or SNU for Mechanical Engineering because POSTECH offers smaller class sizes (typical engineering class is 15-25 students vs 60-100 at SNU/KAIST), 1:1 faculty mentoring is standard, the close integration with POSCO Steel gives unique heavy-industry research access, and the tuition (KRW 6.7 million/year, roughly LKR 1.5 million/year) is among the most affordable top-100-ranked engineering degrees globally. POSTECH BSc Mechanical Engineering grads are heavily recruited by POSCO (the founding sponsor — most outstanding POSTECH grads have an open offer from POSCO), Samsung Electronics, Hyundai Motor, Kia, LG Electronics, SK Hynix, Doosan Heavy Industries, Hanwha Aerospace, plus into research engineer positions at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) and Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) — KRW 50,000,000-90,000,000 starting (LKR 11.5M-21M/yr; Korean salaries plus lower living costs than Seoul give exceptional take-home value).
