Course Overview

POSTECH's BSc in Mechanical Engineering is delivered through the Department of Mechanical Engineering — POSTECH (founded 1986 by POSCO, Korea's steel giant) is one of Asia's top research-intensive universities, consistently ranked top-100 globally (QS, US News, Shanghai) despite a deliberately small student body (~3,000 total students across all programmes). The 4-year programme covers thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, solid mechanics, mechatronics and robotics, manufacturing processes, materials science, control systems, and design. POSTECH's research is heavily integrated with POSCO Steel's R&D, the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory (one of only ~50 dedicated synchrotron facilities globally), and partnerships with Samsung Electronics, Hyundai Motor, LG Electronics, and SK Hynix. The university operates a 4-year full-residence campus model — all undergraduates live in on-campus housing throughout their degree.

Sri Lankan applicants choose POSTECH over KAIST or SNU for Mechanical Engineering because POSTECH offers smaller class sizes (typical engineering class is 15-25 students vs 60-100 at SNU/KAIST), 1:1 faculty mentoring is standard, the close integration with POSCO Steel gives unique heavy-industry research access, and the tuition (KRW 6.7 million/year, roughly LKR 1.5 million/year) is among the most affordable top-100-ranked engineering degrees globally. POSTECH teaches mechanical engineering classes in English — Korean language is NOT required. Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) fully funds undergrad tuition + monthly stipend for international applicants. Korean post-study work is via the D-10 Job Seeker visa, with F-2-7 Long-Term Skilled Worker pathway. Sri Lankan returnees route into senior mechanical engineering positions at MAS Holdings (advanced apparel manufacturing), Brandix Group, Hayleys, Lanka Tiles, Royal Ceramics, Sanken Group, Maga Engineering, Access Engineering, the Sri Lanka Air Force, plus into Chartered Engineer (Sri Lanka) status via EngSL — and increasingly into Samsung Sri Lanka R&D Centre (Colombo).

Entry Requirements

Academic

  • check_circle Sri Lankan Cambridge / Edexcel A-Levels: AAA-A*AA with Mathematics at A or A* and Physics at A or A*.
  • check_circle Sri Lankan GCE A/L: A, A, A or A, A, B (Physical Science stream) with Combined Mathematics and Physics required.
  • check_circle IB Diploma: 36-40 points overall with HL Mathematics (Analysis & Approaches) and HL Physics.
  • check_circle Two academic references; CV; personal statement (500-1,000 words); admissions interview with POSTECH faculty (remote).
  • check_circle POSTECH's admission bar is comparable to KAIST — academic excellence in Mathematics and Physics is essential.

English Proficiency

  • check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 Overall.
  • check_circle TOEFL iBT: 88 Overall.
  • check_circle TOEIC 800+ also accepted.
  • check_circle Korean language is NOT REQUIRED — POSTECH Mechanical Engineering Bachelor's classes are taught primarily in English.

Career Outcomes & PR

Eligible for South Korea's D-10 Job Seeker visa (6 months extendable to 2 years) on graduation, with conversion to F-2-7 Long-Term Skilled Worker visa. POSTECH BSc Mechanical Engineering grads are heavily recruited by POSCO (the founding sponsor — most outstanding POSTECH grads have an open offer from POSCO), Samsung Electronics, Hyundai Motor, Kia, LG Electronics, SK Hynix, Doosan Heavy Industries, Hanwha Aerospace, plus into research engineer positions at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) and Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) — KRW 50,000,000-90,000,000 starting (LKR 11.5M-21M/yr; Korean salaries plus lower living costs than Seoul give exceptional take-home value). Many POSTECH grads continue to a domestic Master's or PhD (most US PhD admits from POSTECH go to MIT, Stanford, Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon mechanical engineering). Sri Lankan returnees route into senior mechanical engineering roles at MAS Holdings advanced manufacturing, Brandix Group, Hayleys, Lanka Tiles, Royal Ceramics, Sanken Group, Maga Engineering, Access Engineering, Sri Lanka Air Force Engineering Wing, Samsung Sri Lanka R&D Centre (Colombo), and into Chartered Engineer (Sri Lanka) status via EngSL.
