BSc Mechanical Engineering
ETH Zurich
Course Overview
ETH Zurich's BSc Mechanical Engineering is a three-year programme taught primarily in German (years 1–2 entirely, years 3+ partly English). ETH's Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering is QS top-10 globally for the field and feeds directly into Swiss engineering heavyweights — ABB, Bühler, Sulzer, Schindler, Stadler Rail, Sika, Lonza — plus automotive R&D (Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Porsche, Ferrari) and aerospace (Pilatus, RUAG, Airbus).
Tuition is CHF 1,460/year for all nationalities — a remarkable proposition for a top-10 engineering school. The trade-off for Sri Lankan applicants is the German language requirement (B2 by enrollment) and the entrance examination route: A/Ls alone are not sufficient. Cambridge A-Levels with A* in Maths and A in Physics, or IB 38+ with HL Maths 6+, are the cleanest direct-entry routes; otherwise the ETH Reduced Entrance Examination applies. Internship and thesis opportunities at ABB, Sulzer, Sika, and Stadler are standard.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle Sri Lankan A/Ls alone are NOT directly accepted — applicants need either Cambridge A-Levels (A* Maths + A Physics), IB 38+ with HL Maths 6+, or must sit the ETH Reduced Entrance Examination.
- check_circle Strong O/L mathematics and demonstrated technical aptitude (school robotics, design portfolio, science olympiad).
- check_circle Motivational letter, CV, full school transcripts.
- check_circle German proficiency at B2 level is required by enrollment — years 1–2 are German-medium.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 Overall (years 3+ electives are in English).
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 88 Overall.
- check_circle Cambridge C1 Advanced or higher.
- check_circle Waived if prior schooling (Cambridge/Edexcel/IB) was English-medium — but note that German B2 is still mandatory.

Career Outcomes & PR
ETH Mechanical Engineering Bachelor's graduates typically progress to ETH's MSc Mechanical Engineering — that's where most career outcomes land. For those moving directly to industry, Switzerland's 6-month post-graduation residence permit and conversion to work permits under non-EU quotas (with STEM exemption pathway) applies. Internships during the BSc at ABB, Sulzer, Sika, Bühler, Stadler Rail, Schindler, RUAG, and Pilatus are well-established. Sri Lankan returnees route into senior engineering at MAS Holdings, Brandix, Hayleys, John Keells engineering arm, and increasingly into automation startups.
