Bachelor in Microengineering
EPFL
Course Overview
EPFL's Bachelor in Microengineering is a distinctively Swiss programme — it brings together precision mechanics, microelectronics, optics, photonics, and biomedical microsystems in one degree. The discipline is Switzerland's national speciality (watchmaking, precision instruments, medical devices) and feeds directly into companies like Rolex, Patek Philippe, Sonova (hearing implants), Logitech, and the Swiss medtech ecosystem.
Three years, taught primarily in French for year 1, with English dominating year 2+. The first-year curriculum is shared with EPFL's other engineering Bachelor's — heavy mathematics, physics, programming, and an introduction to mechanics and electronics. Specialisation in microsystems, biomedical instrumentation, or robotics begins in year 2. Sri Lankan applicants face EPFL's standard admission hurdles: A/Ls alone aren't sufficient; Cambridge A-Levels (A* Maths + A Physics), IB 38+ HL Maths 6+, or the EPFL CMS foundation year is required.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle Sri Lankan A/Ls alone are NOT directly accepted — Cambridge A-Levels (A* Maths + A Physics), IB 38+ with HL Maths 6+, or EPFL's CMS foundation year required.
- check_circle Strong O/L mathematics and demonstrated technical aptitude (electronics, optics, robotics interest).
- check_circle Motivational letter, CV, full school transcripts.
- check_circle French proficiency at B2 level is recommended for year 1; English dominates year 2+.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 Overall (year 2+ electives are in English).
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 88 Overall.
- check_circle Cambridge C1 Advanced or higher.
- check_circle Waived if prior schooling (Cambridge/Edexcel/IB) was English-medium.

Career Outcomes & PR
EPFL Microengineering Bachelor's graduates typically progress into EPFL's MSc Robotics, MSc Biomedical Engineering, or MSc Microengineering. Switzerland's 6-month post-graduation permit and STEM-exempt work-permit conversion applies. BSc internships at Rolex, Patek Philippe, Sonova, Logitech, Nestlé R&D, Philip Morris International, and EPFL spin-offs (MindMaze, Anybotics, Pix4D) are well-established. Sri Lankan returnees are rare in this specialty but well-placed for medical-device roles at Hemas Hospitals, Asiri Group's biomedical division, and Sri Lanka Standards Institution.
