BSc Electrical Engineering and Information Technology
ETH Zurich
Course Overview
ETH Zurich's BSc Electrical Engineering and Information Technology (D-ITET) covers the full breadth of modern EE — power systems, control engineering, communications, signal processing, microelectronics, biomedical engineering, and integrated systems. The D-ITET department is QS top-10 globally and works closely with ABB (HQ Zurich), Hitachi Energy, Swisscom, Logitech (Lausanne), STMicroelectronics, and the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN).
The first two years are taught in German with English entering year 3 and dominating Master's-level electives. Sri Lankan applicants face the same hurdles as ETH's other Bachelor's programmes — German B2 by enrollment, plus either Cambridge A-Levels (A* Maths + A Physics), IB 38+ with HL Maths 6+, or the ETH Reduced Entrance Examination. Tuition is CHF 1,460/year. Strong O/L mathematics and demonstrated electronics interest (school robotics, ham radio, hardware projects) help applications.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle Sri Lankan A/Ls alone are NOT directly accepted — Cambridge A-Levels (A* Maths + A Physics), IB 38+ with HL Maths 6+, or ETH Reduced Entrance Examination required.
- check_circle Strong O/L mathematics and demonstrated technical aptitude (electronics projects, robotics, science olympiad).
- check_circle Motivational letter, CV, full school transcripts.
- check_circle German proficiency at B2 level is required by enrollment — years 1–2 are German-medium.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 Overall (years 3+ electives are in English).
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 88 Overall.
- check_circle Cambridge C1 Advanced or higher.
- check_circle Waived if prior schooling (Cambridge/Edexcel/IB) was English-medium — but German B2 is still mandatory.

Career Outcomes & PR
ETH EE Bachelor's graduates typically progress to ETH's MSc EE&IT or to integrated MSc tracks in Robotics, Cybersecurity, or Quantum Engineering — careers crystallise from there. Switzerland's 6-month post-graduation permit and STEM-exempt work-permit conversion under non-EU quotas applies. Strong BSc placements through internships at ABB, Hitachi Energy, Swisscom, Logitech, STMicroelectronics, IBM Research Zurich, CERN, and ETH spin-offs (Climeworks, Anybotics, Scandit). Sri Lankan returnees fit senior R&D roles at Dialog Axiata, Mobitel, the Lanka Electricity Company, MillenniumIT, and ICTA technology programmes.
