BSc Informatics
Technical University of Munich
Course Overview
TUM's BSc Informatics is Germany's most prestigious computer-science undergraduate degree — ranked #19 globally for Computer Science in the 2026 QS subject rankings and based at the Garching campus north of Munich, alongside the maths, physics and chemistry faculties. The three-year programme is delivered through a hybrid German/English track: the first two semesters are largely in German, with an English-medium parallel offering for international students that has expanded substantially since 2023. Core modules cover discrete maths, algorithms and data structures, computer architecture, software engineering, theoretical CS and a six-month bachelor's thesis usually carried out in a TUM research chair (machine learning, security, robotics, computer vision).
Sri Lankan A-Level applicants from Combined Maths streams are well-positioned — TUM's curriculum assumes strong linear algebra, calculus and discrete maths from day one. Bavaria introduced non-EU tuition of €3,000 per semester from Winter 2024/25, making total three-year tuition about €18,000 — still a small fraction of UK Russell Group equivalents. Munich's tech-employer density (BMW, Siemens, Allianz, SAP Munich, Google Munich, the UnternehmerTUM startup cluster) means most TUM Informatics undergraduates are interning at a target employer by year two.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle Sri Lankan GCE A/L: 3 strong passes (B or above) including Combined Maths or Pure + Applied Maths. Physics is strongly recommended.
- check_circle Cambridge / Edexcel A-Levels: BBB-ABB including Mathematics and one science.
- check_circle IB Diploma: 32+ points with HL Mathematics (Analysis & Approaches preferred).
- check_circle Preliminary documentation (VPD) from uni-assist for all Sri Lankan qualifications — 6-8 week processing window.
- check_circle Letter of motivation and CV. TUM does not interview at undergraduate level.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 Overall (min 5.5 each section) for the English-medium track.
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 88 Overall.

Career Outcomes & PR
Germany offers an 18-month Job Seeker Visa after graduation, leading to an EU Blue Card at the STEM threshold (~€43,800/yr in 2025) and PR in 21-33 months. TUM Informatics graduates routinely place into BMW Group IT, Siemens, SAP, Allianz, Google Munich and the UnternehmerTUM startup cluster (Celonis, Personio, Lilium). Median Munich starting salary for software engineers sits around €58,000. Sri Lankan returnees route into senior engineering roles at WSO2, IFS R&D, Virtusa, Sysco LABS and MillenniumIT.
