Course Overview
RWTH Aachen's BSc Informatik is one of Germany's three flagship undergraduate computer-science degrees alongside TUM and KIT, and the only one of the three based in North Rhine-Westphalia — the federal state that still charges zero tuition for international students. The three-year programme is delivered primarily in German at undergraduate level, but RWTH offers an English-medium parallel track in Computational Engineering Science (CES) and an increasingly English-friendly elective set from year two onwards. Core modules cover programming, data structures, theoretical CS, software engineering, databases and systems, with electives in machine learning, computer vision, robotics, and HPC.
Aachen sits at the Dutch-Belgian-German tri-border, an hour from Cologne and Düsseldorf, and is home to Europe's largest applied-research cluster — Fraunhofer institutes for production technology, laser technology and applied IT all sit on the RWTH campus. Sri Lankan applicants pair RWTH undergrad with the Studienkolleg or a one-year German intensive (DSH-2 or TestDaF 4) before enrolling. Industry partners include Ford Cologne, Microsoft Aachen, e.GO Mobile, and the Aachen automotive R&D ecosystem.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle Sri Lankan GCE A/L: 3 strong passes (B or above) including Combined Maths. Cambridge / Edexcel A-Levels accepted at BBB-ABB including Mathematics.
- check_circle IB Diploma: 30+ points with HL Mathematics.
- check_circle Preliminary documentation (VPD) from uni-assist required for all Sri Lankan qualifications — 6-8 week processing.
- check_circle Most Sri Lankan A/L applicants need a Studienkolleg year (T-Kurs) before direct undergraduate entry — RWTH operates one of Germany's largest Studienkollegs.
- check_circle Letter of motivation and CV. No interview at undergraduate level.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 Overall (no band below 6.0) for English-medium electives and the parallel CES track.
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 90 Overall.
- check_circle German DSH-2 or TestDaF 4 required for the main BSc Informatik track (instruction is primarily in German).
- check_circle Waived if your A/L, Cambridge International or IB programme was taught and assessed entirely in English (English component only — German requirement stands).

Career Outcomes & PR
Germany offers an 18-month Job Seeker Visa post-graduation, leading to an EU Blue Card at the STEM threshold (~€43,800/yr in 2025) and PR in 21-33 months. RWTH Informatik graduates place into Ford Cologne IT, Microsoft Aachen, Siemens, SAP, Bosch, plus the dense Düsseldorf/Cologne corporate IT cluster. Aachen's startup scene (e.GO Mobile, Talpasolutions) hires heavily from RWTH. Sri Lankan returnees route into senior engineering roles at WSO2, IFS R&D, Virtusa, and Sysco LABS.
