BSc Environmental Sciences (Co-op)
University of Waterloo (Faculty of Environment)
Course Overview
Waterloo's Faculty of Environment is the largest and oldest environment faculty in Canada — founded 1969 — and the BSc Environmental Sciences sits inside the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences. Four specialisations are offered after first year: Ecology, Geology, Plant Biology, and Water Science. The defining feature is Waterloo's mandatory co-operative education programme — students alternate four-month academic terms with paid four-month work placements, completing five or six co-op terms across the degree. The Co-op stream extends the programme to five years total but ships graduates out with 20–24 months of paid, employer-validated work experience and roughly CAD 60,000–90,000 in lifetime co-op earnings before they graduate.
Waterloo's co-op employer network in environmental science is unmatched in Canada — Environment and Climate Change Canada, Natural Resources Canada, Parks Canada, provincial Ministries of Environment, plus private-sector placements at WSP, Stantec, Golder, GHD, AECOM, and the major mining and energy firms. Sri Lankan applicants from A/L Biology and A/L Combined Maths streams who want a hands-on, field-and-lab-heavy degree (rather than a purely theoretical BSc) are the natural fit. The curriculum has heavy GIS, hydrology, and ecological modelling content from second year onward.
Canada's 3-year Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is automatic on graduation, and co-op work hours count toward Canadian Experience Class for Permanent Residence applications. Waterloo Environment grads place into federal environmental policy, provincial conservation authorities, environmental consulting (WSP, Stantec, Golder), and the mining and energy sustainability divisions. The faculty's research strength in climate science and the Water Institute (one of the world's largest freshwater research centres) gives applicants direct exposure to Canada's climate-adaptation programme.
