Course Overview

Johannes Kepler University Linz was one of the first universities in Europe to offer a dedicated bachelor's degree in Artificial Intelligence, and the six-semester, 180-ECTS BSc is taught entirely in English. It builds solid foundations in mathematics and computer science, then moves into Python programming, algorithms and data structures, machine learning, deep learning and generative AI, knowledge representation and reasoning, data science and statistics, image and natural-language processing, robotics and reinforcement learning. First-year students complete Austria's Studies Introduction and Orientation Phase (StEOP) before progressing, which keeps standards high.

For Sri Lankan school leavers with strong Combined Maths and Physics A/Ls, the programme is one of the most affordable ways to earn a European AI degree: Austrian public-university tuition is about €727 per semester for non-EU students, so the three-year degree costs less in tuition than a single year at many UK universities. JKU's Institute for Machine Learning, home of LSTM co-inventor Sepp Hochreiter, gives undergraduates access to world-class research, and the degree leads directly into JKU's English-taught MSc Artificial Intelligence. Graduates can use Austria's 12-month job-seeker residence permit to enter the EU tech market.

Career Outcomes & PR

Austria grants non-EU graduates a 12-month residence permit to look for qualified work, which converts to a Red-White-Red Card once employed. JKU lists IT, finance, insurance, public administration and energy management among the sectors hiring its AI bachelor's graduates, and many continue to the MSc Artificial Intelligence. Linz-area employers include Dynatrace, voestalpine, Fronius, Engel, KTM and the Software Competence Center Hagenberg. Sri Lankan returnees can move into machine-learning, data and software roles at WSO2, Sysco LABS, IFS, Dialog and 99x.
