BSc in Applied Data Science
MODUL University Vienna
Deadline detail: Rolling admission with places allocated as applications arrive — non-EU applicants should apply by spring to leave time for the Austrian student residence permit, which is slow
Course Overview
MODUL University Vienna is a small private university on the Kahlenberg above Vienna, owned by the Vienna Chamber of Commerce, and its BSc in Applied Data Science is the technical anchor of its undergraduate portfolio. The emphasis sits on the word applied: programming in Python and R, statistics and probability, databases and data engineering, machine learning, data visualisation, and — because MODUL is fundamentally a business-facing institution — the commercial context in which those techniques get used. Students work with real datasets from tourism, sustainability, marketing and public policy, which are MODUL's own research strengths.
The trade-off with a small private university is worth being straightforward about. You pay considerably more than at an Austrian public university, where tuition for non-EU students runs to roughly €1,500 a year. In return you get English-medium teaching from day one with no German requirement, class sizes measured in dozens rather than hundreds, rolling admission rather than a rigid single deadline, structured career support, and none of the bureaucratic obstacle course that a Sri Lankan applicant faces getting a Sri Lankan A/L or A-Level qualification recognised for direct entry to a public Austrian university. For many families that trade is the actual reason to choose MODUL.
Vienna itself is a strong argument. It has topped international quality-of-living rankings for years, living costs are markedly lower than in Zurich, Munich or Amsterdam, and the city hosts a genuine tech employer base alongside the UN's Vienna office, OPEC and the IAEA. For a Sri Lankan student the calculation is clear: an English-taught, three-year EU bachelor's in the most in-demand technical field of the moment, with Austria's 12-month post-study job-seeker permit and the EU Blue Card route sitting at the end of it. Note honestly that this is a business-school data degree rather than a computer science degree — if your goal is systems programming, compilers or a research career in machine learning, a technical university is the better fit.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle A completed secondary school qualification giving university entrance — Cambridge or Edexcel A-Levels, the IB Diploma, or the Sri Lankan GCE A/L are all accepted.
- check_circle Cambridge / Edexcel: typically three A-Level passes; Mathematics at A-Level or AS-Level is strongly preferred and makes the first-year statistics and programming sequence far more manageable.
- check_circle Sri Lankan GCE A/L: passes in the Physical Science, Biological Science or Commerce stream, with Combined Mathematics or Mathematics being the strongest preparation.
- check_circle IB Diploma: 24 points and above, ideally with Mathematics at Standard or Higher Level.
- check_circle No prior programming experience is assumed, but comfort with mathematics is genuinely load-bearing here — applicants who avoided maths at A/L tend to struggle in semesters two and three.
- check_circle Motivation letter, CV, school transcripts and a copy of your passport; admission includes an interview, usually held online for overseas applicants.
- check_circle Non-EU applicants need an Austrian student residence permit (Aufenthaltsbewilligung Studierender) applied for at the Austrian representation accredited to Sri Lanka — this is one of the slower processes in Europe, so start immediately on receiving an offer.
- check_circle Proof of sufficient funds is required for the residence permit; the annual threshold is set by Austrian law and is indexed each year, so check the current figure rather than an older one.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.0-6.5 Overall is the standard requirement for MODUL's English-taught bachelor's degrees.
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 80 Overall.
- check_circle Cambridge B2 First or C1 Advanced is accepted.
- check_circle The test is waived for applicants who have completed their secondary education in English — most Sri Lankan Cambridge, Edexcel and IB students, and students from English-medium national schools, qualify by submitting a medium-of-instruction letter from the school.
- check_circle The entire degree is taught in English and German is not required for admission or graduation.
- check_circle That said, German at A2-B1 makes internships, part-time work and the post-study job search in Vienna substantially easier — MODUL offers German courses and taking them is worth the effort.

Career Outcomes & PR
Graduates of an Austrian degree may apply for a residence permit to seek work for 12 months after graduation, and a qualifying job offer converts it into a Red-White-Red Card. Austria's shortage-occupation list has consistently included IT and data roles, which is the most reliable route in — and after that the EU Blue Card opens mobility across the union. Vienna's employer base for this degree includes the banking and insurance sector (Erste Group, Raiffeisen, UNIQA, Vienna Insurance Group), telecoms (A1 Telekom Austria, Magenta), the large retail and logistics groups (REWE, Spar, Rewe International), consulting and Big Four analytics practices, and the international organisations headquartered in the city. Roles are data analyst, business intelligence analyst, data engineer and junior data scientist. Many graduates also continue to a master's — MODUL's own MSc in Data Science for Sustainability, or a technical master's at TU Wien or elsewhere in the EU, which is often the better long-run move. Sri Lankan returnees enter analytics and data engineering teams at Dialog Axiata, John Keells, Commercial Bank, HNB, Sampath Bank, MAS Holdings, WSO2, IFS, 99X and the Colombo offices of the global consultancies.
