Course Overview
Boston University's Department of Biology sits in the College of Arts and Sciences on the Charles River campus, and the BA/BS in Biology is deliberately structured as a family of specialisations rather than one generic degree — Cell Biology, Molecular Biology and Genetics; Ecology and Conservation Biology; Neurobiology; Behavioral Biology; Quantitative Biology; and Marine Science. The last of those is genuinely distinctive: BU's Marine Semester takes students out of the classroom for four intensive research blocks, including field work at the BU Marine Program's coastal sites and in Belize. The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program places students in working labs from the first year, and BU expects, rather than merely permits, undergraduates to do real research.
Location does a lot of work in this degree's value. Boston is the densest life-sciences cluster on earth: Boston Medical Center and the BU Chobanian and Avedisian School of Medicine are BU's own, and within a few kilometres sit the Broad Institute, the Whitehead, Dana-Farber, Massachusetts General, and the Kendall Square biotech corridor housing Moderna, Vertex, Biogen, Takeda and several hundred smaller companies. Undergraduate research assistantships and summer internships in that ecosystem are attainable in a way they are not from most US campuses, and BU biology graduates use them as the bridge into medical school, PhD programmes and industry.
Two practical points for Sri Lankan families. First, cost: BU is expensive and its published tuition is only part of the picture — budget realistically for housing, health insurance and living costs on top. BU does award merit scholarships to international undergraduates, including the full-tuition Trustee Scholarship and the Presidential Scholarship, and these are worth pursuing seriously because they are among the few large awards genuinely open to international first-year applicants. Second, work rights: Biology is a STEM-designated field, so graduates on F-1 status qualify for 12 months of Optional Practical Training plus the 24-month STEM OPT extension — 36 months of US work authorisation after graduation, which is the single most important structural advantage a US science degree carries over a non-STEM one.

Academic
- check_circle Sri Lankan GCE A/L: strong passes in Biology, Chemistry and Physics or Mathematics — competitive applicants present A and B grades across the science stream.
- check_circle Cambridge / Edexcel A Levels: AAB or better including Biology and Chemistry; IB Diploma: 36+ points with Higher Level Biology and Chemistry.
- check_circle Full secondary transcripts, a counsellor recommendation and two teacher recommendations (at least one from a science teacher).
- check_circle The Common Application personal essay plus BU's supplemental essay — BU reads these carefully and international applicants underinvest in them.
- check_circle SAT or ACT is test-optional at BU, but a strong SAT score (1450+) still helps an international applicant competing for merit scholarships.
- check_circle Financial documentation showing capacity to fund the degree is required for the I-20, which precedes the F-1 visa interview at the US Embassy in Colombo.

- check_circle Waived if you have completed at least three years of secondary education in which English was the sole language of instruction — Sri Lankan applicants from Cambridge, Edexcel, IB or English-medium national-curriculum schools qualify, with a letter from the school confirming the medium of instruction.

Career Outcomes & PR
BU Biology graduates split three ways: onward to medical, dental and veterinary school (BU has a substantial pre-health advising operation and a strong medical-school placement record), into PhD programmes across the US and Europe, and directly into the Boston biotech and pharmaceutical sector — Moderna, Vertex, Biogen, Takeda, Alnylam and the hospital research systems. Because Biology is STEM-designated, F-1 graduates qualify for 12 months of OPT plus the 24-month STEM OPT extension, giving 36 months of US work authorisation and a realistic runway to H-1B sponsorship. Sri Lankan returnees route into research and quality roles at the Medical Research Institute, the Industrial Technology Institute and SLINTEC, into the pharmaceutical and diagnostics sector, into conservation science with IUCN Sri Lanka and the Department of Wildlife Conservation, and into academic posts at Colombo, Peradeniya and Ruhuna.
