BEng Mechanical Engineering
University of Birmingham Dubai
Course Overview
The BEng Mechanical Engineering at Birmingham Dubai is the same IMechE-accredited programme as the Edgbaston campus — the UK degree certificate, taught in Dubai International Academic City. For Sri Lankan A/L science students, this is a way to get a Russell Group engineering degree with two-thirds of the cost of studying in the UK and direct access to one of the world's busiest engineering job markets.
The curriculum builds from solid mechanics, thermodynamics and materials in Year 1 through to design, control systems, and a substantial individual project in Year 3 — typically applied to GCC-relevant problems (desalination plants, HVAC for hot climates, motorsport at Yas Marina, rail rolling stock for Etihad Rail). Lab access is shared with the postgraduate cohort, and there is a placement route between Years 2 and 3.

Career Outcomes & PR
Mechanical engineering grads in Dubai walk into roles across aerospace (Emirates Engineering, Strata), energy (ADNOC, ENOC, Dubai Petroleum), HVAC consultancies (Hilson Moran, WSP), and the booming EV/rail sector. Birmingham's IMechE accreditation means graduates can move toward Chartered Engineer (CEng) status after qualifying experience. The UAE Golden Visa is open to engineers with qualifying salaries.
