University of Waterloo (Faculty of Engineering)
Course Overview
Waterloo's BASc in Mechanical Engineering is a 5-year, co-op-mandatory engineering degree run out of the Engineering 5 and 7 buildings on the main campus. The lockstep structure alternates 4-month academic terms with 4-month paid co-op terms — six work terms in total, around 24 months of paid industry experience by graduation. CEAB-accredited, which means the degree is recognised by Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) and by engineering regulators across Canada and most Commonwealth countries (including IESL in Sri Lanka).
The program runs three streams in upper years: Mechatronics, Energy & Environment, and Manufacturing. Co-op placements span automotive (Magna, Linamar, Toyota Cambridge), aerospace (Pratt & Whitney Canada, Bombardier, Lockheed Martin), energy (Hydro One, Bruce Power), and increasingly EV/battery (Tesla, Stellantis, GM Markham). Sri Lankan applicants typically come in from Mathematics + Physics + Chemistry A/L streams.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle Sri Lankan A/L: 3 A passes in Combined Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. Engineering admissions are competitive — AAA recommended.
- check_circle Strong Combined Mathematics specifically is mandatory; Pure Math fluency is tested in first-year calculus and linear algebra streams.
- check_circle Admissions Information Form (AIF) required — projects, robotics clubs, FIRST/VEX competition history, or any hands-on engineering work strengthens the file.
- check_circle Co-op is mandatory (not optional) for all BASc Mechanical Engineering students — Waterloo does not run a non-co-op pathway for engineering.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 Overall (min 6.0 in Writing and Speaking).
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 90 Overall (min 25 Speaking, 25 Writing).
- check_circle Waived if your last 4 years of full-time education were in English-medium.

Career Outcomes & PR
Waterloo Mechanical Engineering graduates are eligible for the 3-year PGWP and qualify for P.Eng licensure in Ontario after 4 years of post-grad experience (one of the fastest paths to a Canadian P.Eng). New-grad salaries in Ontario sit around CAD 75,000-85,000 — Magna, Linamar, Toyota Cambridge, Pratt & Whitney Canada, and Bombardier are the largest direct recruiters. Strong PR pathway through Express Entry, particularly under the Canadian Experience Class once 12 months of full-time post-grad work is logged.
