Course Overview
Toronto Metropolitan University (rebranded from Ryerson in 2022) hosts the RTA School of Media within the Creative School — Canada's largest and most production-focused media school, ranked #1 in Canada for media production training (Hollywood Reporter / Variety industry surveys). The downtown Toronto campus puts students minutes from the CBC Broadcasting Centre, Bell Media (CTV, TSN, Crave), Corus Entertainment, the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) Bell Lightbox, and the cluster of post-production houses in Liberty Village (Deluxe Toronto, Technicolor, Mr. X VFX). The 4-year BCommStud (Hons) Media Production is a hands-on, studio-led degree covering screen production, sound design, broadcast journalism, digital media, post-production, and a fourth-year capstone production project (short film, documentary, or interactive media work).
Sri Lankan A-Level / IB applicants from English-medium school backgrounds choose TMU for the industry-pipeline strength: Toronto is the third-largest film/TV production hub in North America (after LA and NYC), and the RTA School has long-running placement pipelines with CBC, Bell Media, Netflix Canada, Amazon Studios Canada, Lionsgate, and the entire post-production cluster. Canada's PGWP (Post-Graduation Work Permit) gives 3 years of open work rights after a 4-year Bachelor's — by far the most generous post-study work scheme of any major destination.

Academic
- check_circle Sri Lankan Cambridge / Edexcel A-Levels: 3 A-Level passes minimum at grade C or higher, with English Language strongly preferred.
- check_circle Sri Lankan GCE A/L: 3 passes in Arts, Commerce, or related stream — minimum C in each subject.
- check_circle IB Diploma: 28 points minimum with English at HL or SL5+.
- check_circle Portfolio of creative work required — short video clips, photography, audio production samples, or written scripts (uploaded via TMU's GradeXpert portal). Portfolio is the most important admission factor for RTA Media Production.
- check_circle Personal Statement (250-500 words) and creative supplemental application.
- check_circle Two references — at least one from a teacher in a creative / English subject.

Career Outcomes & PR
Eligible for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) — up to 3 years of open work rights for graduates of 4-year degrees, no employer sponsorship required. RTA Media Production graduates route into the CBC Broadcasting Centre, Bell Media (CTV, TSN, BNN Bloomberg, Crave), Corus Entertainment, Rogers Sportsnet, Netflix Canada productions, Amazon Studios Canada, Lionsgate Canada, plus the entire post-production cluster (Deluxe Toronto, Technicolor, Mr. X VFX, Pixomondo, Soho VFX, Stereo D). Median Canadian starting salary CAD 50,000-70,000 (LKR 11.75M-16.45M/yr). The PGWP-to-PR pathway via Canadian Experience Class (CEC) is well-trodden: 1-year skilled work post-grad makes you eligible for Express Entry PR. Sri Lankan returnees route into senior production posts at Sirasa, Derana, News First, Hiru, MTV / Maharaja Group, plus into independent production companies (Mawbima Asia, Wakanda Studios, Iconnect Media), advertising production (Triad, Mullen Lowe, Leo Burnett, JWT Colombo), and into broadcast journalism at Daily FT, Ada Derana, EconomyNext, Roar Media.
