Course Overview
Melbourne's Bachelor of Design (Architecture Major) is delivered through the Melbourne School of Design (MSD) within the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning — Australia's top-ranked architecture school (QS by Subject) and consistently ranked top-25 globally. The 3-year Bachelor's is the first half of the standard Melbourne Model pathway to registered architect status — students complete the BDes (Architecture) followed by the 2-year Master of Architecture (M.Arch) for full AACA accreditation and AIA (Australian Institute of Architects) registration. The BDes covers history and theory of architecture, structures and construction, environmental design (Melbourne is a global leader in passive solar and tropical architecture, with multiple faculty publishing on Bawa and tropical modernism), design studio sequence, computer-aided design (Rhino, Grasshopper, Revit, ArchiCAD), and a required Melbourne School of Design Building studio elective (the MSD building itself is a global teaching case study in sustainable architecture — 6 Green Star rating).

Career Outcomes & PR
BDes graduates typically continue to the 2-year Master of Architecture (M.Arch) at Melbourne, RMIT, Monash MADA, UNSW, or the University of Sydney for full AACA / AIA accreditation — only then can they register as Architects in Australia. Without M.Arch, BDes graduates qualify for Architectural Assistant / Junior Designer roles at AUD 60,000-75,000 starting (LKR 12.6M-15.75M/yr). With M.Arch completed: Bates Smart, Cox Architecture, ARM Architecture, Woods Bagot, BVN, Hassell, Denton Corker Marshall, Lyons, John Wardle Architects — AUD 85,000-110,000 starting (LKR 18M-23M/yr). Sri Lankan returnees with the complete BDes + M.Arch combination gain Chartered Architect status with SLIA and join MICD, Channa Daswatte Associates, Palinda Kannangara Architects, Design Consortium, PWA Architects, Senanayake Associates, or establish independent practices.
