BA Philosophy
University of Otago
Course Overview
Otago Philosophy is ranked in the top 100 globally in QS World Rankings by Subject and is widely regarded as New Zealand's leading Philosophy department. The 3-year BA Philosophy covers Ethics (applied, bioethics, environmental ethics), Logic, Philosophy of Mind, Philosophy of Science, Political Philosophy, Metaphysics & Epistemology, and a distinctive Asian and Maori Philosophy stream. Otago is the home of the Bioethics Centre — one of only three centres of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere — and runs the Australasian Journal of Philosophy editorial office.
Sri Lankan applicants — including pre-law students, NIE Buddhist Studies undergraduates aiming to broaden their philosophical training, and those interested in a teaching / academic career — choose Otago for the small class sizes (most upper-year philosophy seminars are under 15 students), the residential college experience in Dunedin, and the lower total programme cost relative to NZ universities in Auckland and Wellington. Otago BA is the second-cheapest fee point in the country across all New Zealand Tier-1 universities.
