Bachelor of Arts in History
University of Otago
Course Overview
Otago's Bachelor of Arts in History is taught from New Zealand's oldest university (founded 1869) — ranked top 200 globally (QS 2025) and consistently top 100 for History subject ranking. The three-year programme is structured around three pathways: Asian Histories (including substantial South Asian / Indian Ocean coverage), Pacific & Colonial Histories, and European & Global Histories. The Asian Histories track lets Sri Lankan applicants engage academically with their own region from a New Zealand vantage point.
Otago's residential college system (15 residential colleges across the campus city of Dunedin) gives the experience a small-campus feel atypical of larger NZ universities. The History department is consistently among the most research-active in New Zealand — RPI scores, Marsden Fund grants, and substantial PhD-cohort completions across the past decade. Year three students take a research-based capstone (10,000-word independent project).
For Sri Lankan applicants, Otago is one of the most cost-effective top-200 humanities degrees globally. New Zealand's 3-year Post-Study Work Visa applies to bachelor's graduates and PR pathway via Skilled Migrant Category is realistic with 24 months of qualifying employment. Dunedin's cost-of-living is materially lower than Auckland, Wellington, or any major Australian / UK / US city.
