Bachelor of Arts in English Literature
University of Otago
Course Overview
Otago's Bachelor of Arts in English Literature is taught from New Zealand's oldest university (founded 1869), consistently ranked top 200 globally (QS). The three-year programme moves from medieval and Renaissance writing through the novel, poetry, and drama to contemporary world literatures in English — including strong postcolonial and Pacific coverage that speaks directly to Sri Lankan and South Asian readers. Students develop close-reading, critical-writing, and research skills that transfer directly into publishing, teaching, communications, and law.
The residential-college city of Dunedin gives Otago a small-campus feel that suits first-time overseas students, and its cost of living is materially lower than Auckland, Wellington, or any major UK / Australian city. New Zealand's 3-year Post-Study Work Visa applies to bachelor's graduates, and a PR pathway via the Skilled Migrant Category is realistic with qualifying employment — making Otago one of the most cost-effective top-200 humanities degrees available to Sri Lankan applicants.
