Cost of Studying in Italy from Sri Lanka — ISEE income-scaled + Bocconi premium · Updated 2026-05-22

Italy is two pricing tiers — choose right and your Year 1 cost halves.

Sapienza, Bologna, Padova use the ISEE Parificato system — non-EU students from middle-income Sri Lankan families pay €900–€2,800/year. Bocconi and Politecnico charge €15,000–€24,000/year. We help you target the right tier for your profile.

Realistic Year 1 total

LKR 5M – 14M / year

LKR figures use an indicative rate of EUR 1 ≈ LKR 340. ISEE Parificato declaration unlocks income-scaled tuition. Italian consular offices require €6,947.50/year (Sapienza guideline) in proof of funds.

Where your money actually goes

Forget the headline number for a moment. Studying in Italy has four cost buckets — and three of them are negotiable.

school

University

Tuition

Negotiable via scholarship choice, university choice and level of study. The biggest single number on the page.

Rent, food, transport. Choosing a smaller city can save the equivalent of a year's tuition over a 3-year degree.

What you pay the university

Ranges below cover every Italy institution Lanka Scholar partners with. The lower end is regional / public universities; the upper end is elite institutions. Your tuition is set by where you apply — and how aggressively you target scholarships.

Study Level LKR (approx.)
Bachelor's — public uni, ISEE-scaled (per year) LKR 310k – 1.4M
Master's — public uni, ISEE-scaled (per year) LKR 310k – 1.5M
Master's — Bocconi (per year) LKR 6.1M – 8.2M
Master's — Politecnico Milano (per year) LKR 1.4M – 5.1M
PhD positions (paid research) Net positive

Your single biggest variable

City choice is the lever Sri Lankan families most often underuse. Over a 3-year degree, choosing a smaller city instead of the capital can save the equivalent of a full year's tuition — for the same Italy qualification.

Milan (Bocconi, Politecnico)

€1,100 – €1,400 / month

LKR 375k – 475k / month

Rome (Sapienza, LUISS)

€900 – €1,200 / month

LKR 305k – 410k / month

Bologna / Padova / Florence

€800 – €1,000 / month

LKR 270k – 340k / month

Smaller cities (Pisa, Pavia, Trento)

€650 – €850 / month

LKR 220k – 290k / month

Four ways to bring the number down

The headline figure is the starting line, not the finish line. Every Sri Lankan student who lands in Italy has pulled at least two of these levers.

ISEE Parificato unlocks income-scaled tuition

Italian public universities scale tuition by family income. Middle-income Sri Lankan families typically pay €900–€2,800/year at Sapienza, Bologna, Padova — instead of the €15,000+ headline non-EU rate. We help with the ISEE submission.

How scholarships change this math

Italian Ministry of University and Research (MIUR) bilateral scholarships fund tuition + €450/month stipend for non-EU students at public universities. Bocconi Merit Award covers 20–100% of MSc tuition. Politecnico International Merit Award covers full tuition for top international applicants. EDISU regional scholarships fund students in Piedmont (PoliTo, U Turin) and several other regions.
