Application & SOP Writing
A Statement of Purpose admissions officers actually want to read.
What this service is
The SOP is the single most-edited document in a successful application. Most rejections we see are for SOPs that read like the student's CV in prose form: a list of what they did, with no reasoning for why this course, this university, this destination, and this career path are coherent.
We write SOPs the way admissions officers read them — looking for a clear research / career hypothesis, evidence the student has tested it, and concrete next steps the proposed programme unlocks. Two senior-counsellor passes minimum, with feedback you'll actually disagree with on the first draft (that's the point). Same approach for Academic CV, portfolio, and the referee-brief that turns a generic recommendation letter into a useful one.
We don't ghost-write — every SOP is yours, in your voice, with your story. We rewrite for structure and pressure-test the claims, but the words on the page have to be ones you'd defend in an interview.
What you receive
Concrete deliverables, not a sales pitch.
- check_circle Final SOP per university (universities often want different angles for the same course)
- check_circle Academic CV in the format expected by your target programmes (UCAS-style, US-style, or research-CV)
- check_circle Portfolio review for creative / design / architecture courses
- check_circle A 1-page brief for each of your referees — what to emphasise, what the programme cares about
- check_circle A submission checklist with the document set per university
How we work it
The 3-step process for Application & SOP Writing.
Story session
A 60-minute conversation about your academic + work journey. The aim is to surface the 2–3 specific moments that map to the career hypothesis you'll defend in your SOP. We record (with permission) so the writing draws on your own phrasing.
Draft + edit cycle
You write the first draft from a structured brief. We do a senior-counsellor edit, you revise, second pass, then a final polish. Two full passes per SOP, more if the university list is long.
Referee briefing
We help you brief each referee with a one-page note that says what the programme values and what aspect of you they're best placed to vouch for — so the letters land instead of being generic.
Common questions
About application & sop writing.
-
How many drafts do you do per SOP? expand_more
Two senior-counsellor passes minimum, more if the SOP genuinely needs it. We don't charge per draft — the goal is the final version is strong, not that we stopped at an arbitrary number. -
Can you help with a Personal Statement (UK undergrad / UCAS)? expand_more
Yes — UCAS Personal Statements are a different genre to a postgrad SOP, and we treat them differently. 4,000-character limit, single statement across all five UCAS choices, much more emphasis on academic engagement and less on career hypothesis. Senior counsellors who've placed many undergrads handle these.
