WU Vienna Merit-Based Scholarship

The WU Vienna Merit-Based Scholarship is a recurring semester-by-semester award for outstanding students enrolled at WU Vienna University of Economics and Business. Amounts range from €500 to €1,500 per semester depending on academic performance, with awards renewable as long as you maintain the required GPA threshold. Unlike entry-level scholarships, this one is open to enrolled students — Master's and PhD candidates apply once they have at least one full semester of WU transcripts. WU is consistently triple-accredited (AACSB, EQUIS, AMBA) and among Europe's top 30 business schools. Strong fit for Sri Lankan applicants who self-fund the first semester and then offset costs from semester 2 onward via this scheme.

Top-of-Class Academic Performance

Selection ranks applicants by GPA (Austrian 1-5 scale; 1 is best). Typically you need a 1.5 (Austrian average) or better — equivalent to a clear distinction profile. Sri Lankan first-class Bachelor's holders who maintain that level at WU present strongly.

Programme Language

English-taught Master's programmes (International Management, Finance, Marketing, Quantitative Finance) are eligible. German-taught programmes also eligible — requires C1 German for those, naturally.

account_tree Application Process

1

Wait until end of semester 1

Complete your first WU semester and obtain a full transcript showing GPA. You cannot apply for this scholarship as an incoming student — it rewards performance at WU specifically.

2

Apply each semester via the WU portal

Submit your application via the WU online scholarship portal during the application window each semester (typically October for winter semester results, March for summer semester results). Required: current transcript, CV, motivation letter.

3

GPA-based ranking

WU's Vice-Rector's office ranks all applicants strictly by GPA within each programme. Top performers receive the higher tier (€1,500); next tier receives €1,000; broader tier receives €500. Tier cut-offs vary by programme size.

4

Award + reapplication

Awards are paid as a lump sum each semester. Reapply each semester you wish to be considered — there is no automatic renewal. Combine with the OeAD Ernst Mach Grant or external awards as funding rules permit.
