Course Overview
Turku's OPPI doctoral programme, run under the University of Turku Graduate School, is the country's main doctoral track for learning sciences. It covers learning and motivation research, reading and literacy development, mathematics learning difficulties, technology-enhanced learning, assessment and educational measurement, and teacher professional development. The Centre for Learning Research and the Turku Institute for Advanced Studies give the programme unusual depth in longitudinal and intervention studies — several of the datasets running here have tracked cohorts for over a decade.
As with all Finnish doctorates, there is no tuition fee for any nationality. Funding for living costs comes from salaried doctoral researcher positions attached to funded projects (about €2,500-3,100 a month gross), Research Council of Finland project posts, or personal foundation grants, and it is applied for separately from the study right. Turku is a smaller and considerably cheaper city than Helsinki, which materially changes what a grant has to cover.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle Master's degree in education, psychology, teacher education or a related field, including a research thesis, with a good grade average.
- check_circle A research plan of roughly 10 pages: question, theoretical framework, design, data and analysis strategy, ethics, and a four-year schedule.
- check_circle A confirmed supervisor within the Faculty of Education — approach potential supervisors directly with a draft plan before the formal round.
- check_circle Academic CV and any publications, conference papers or teaching experience.
- check_circle Officially certified Master's certificate and transcripts; Finnish document verification is strict, so begin authentication well ahead of the deadline.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 Overall (writing 6.0+).
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 90 Overall.
- check_circle Waived if your Master's was taught and assessed entirely in English — a Medium of Instruction letter from your Sri Lankan university is accepted.
- check_circle The doctorate, supervision and public defence can be completed entirely in English.

Career Outcomes & PR
Graduates take university lectureships and post-doctoral posts in education and psychology, research roles in educational measurement and assessment agencies, and evaluation and policy positions with ministries and multilateral organisations. Learning-sciences doctorates also move into edtech research and product roles, where evidence of intervention design and measurement is genuinely valued. Finland's two-year post-study residence permit applies, and employed doctoral researchers accumulate residence toward permanent status. Sri Lankan graduates return into faculty and research posts at Colombo, Peradeniya, Kelaniya, OUSL and the National Institute of Education, into assessment and curriculum reform work at the Ministry of Education and the Department of Examinations, and into education programme design at UNICEF, UNESCO and the World Bank.
