PhD in Law and Business

LUISS Guido Carli is Rome's private university founded and still backed by Confindustria, Italy's employers' federation — which explains why its doctoral programme in Law and Business is built at the seam between legal scholarship and corporate practice rather than inside a traditional law faculty. The programme is taught and examined in English across four years: coursework and research-methods training in the first year, a compulsory research period abroad, and then dissertation work supervised by the Department of Law. Research clusters sit around corporate governance and company law, competition and regulation, capital markets and financial regulation, insolvency, and the law of digital markets — the last of these unusually well-resourced given LUISS's proximity to Italy's antitrust authority and to the EU regulatory conversation.

For a Sri Lankan lawyer or commerce graduate this is one of the more accessible fully funded doctoral routes in Europe. Italian doctorates are structured as funded positions, not as fee-paying study. LUISS admits through a single annual public competition and successful candidates hold a scholarship that waives tuition entirely and pays the national doctoral stipend of €16,243 a year gross, uplifted by 50 percent for authorised research periods abroad, plus a research and mobility budget of roughly 10 percent of the scholarship. Selection is genuinely competitive — a handful of places against an international field — and turns on the research proposal more than on grades. Applicants from Colombo, Peradeniya or an overseas LLM with a clear question in corporate or regulatory law, and ideally some publication or practice record, are the ones who get shortlisted. Rome living costs are moderate by Western European standards, and the stipend is workable if not luxurious.

Note that this is a research doctorate, not a professional qualification. It does not admit you to practise in Italy or Sri Lanka, and it is a poor fit for someone whose goal is a law firm partnership. It is the right degree for someone aiming at academia, a regulator, a central bank, or an international organisation.
