PhD in Resources, Environment and Sustainability
Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability (IRES), University of British Columbia
Course Overview
UBC's PhD in Resources, Environment and Sustainability is delivered through the Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability (IRES) — a globally-recognised interdisciplinary unit ranked top-15 worldwide for Environmental Sciences (QS by Subject). The 4-year doctorate is structured around problem-driven research themes: climate adaptation, fisheries and marine resources, water systems, energy transitions, food systems, biodiversity conservation, and Indigenous environmental governance. IRES sits adjacent to the Liu Institute for Global Issues and the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions (PICS), giving students access to one of the most policy-engaged sustainability research networks in North America.
Sri Lankan applicants typically reach UBC IRES after a strong Bachelor's in Environmental Science, Forestry, Agriculture, Geography, or Engineering from the University of Peradeniya (Faculty of Agriculture), Wayamba, Sabaragamuwa, or UoM, often with a research-based Master's first. UBC's PhD funding minimum (the IRES baseline) covers full tuition + a CAD 27,000+ annual stipend for the full 4 years. Sri Lankan returnees from IRES have routed into senior roles at the Central Environmental Authority, the Forest Department, the Department of Agriculture, the Asian Development Bank Colombo office (climate adaptation portfolio), IUCN Sri Lanka, the International Water Management Institute (IWMI Colombo headquarters), and academic posts at the University of Peradeniya Faculty of Agriculture and the Postgraduate Institute of Agriculture (PGIA).

Academic
- check_circle First-class Sri Lankan Bachelor's (Hons) in Environmental Science, Forestry, Agriculture, Geography, Biology, Engineering, or a related discipline — GPA 3.5+ / Second Upper or higher.
- check_circle Master's by research strongly preferred — direct-from-Bachelor's admission requires exceptional research output and demonstrable independence.
- check_circle Pre-approved supervisor match required — IRES uses a faculty-supervised model, so applicants must contact and be accepted by a faculty supervisor before submission.
- check_circle Research statement (3-5 pages) framed around a sustainability challenge.
- check_circle Three academic / professional references; evidence of field work, policy engagement, or publications is highly valued.
English Proficiency
