Course Overview
Bologna's PhD in Economics and Statistics is among Europe's most respected doctoral programmes in economics, jointly run with the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia and the University of Catania. Four years, fully English-taught, with first-year coursework (microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics) at PhD-level rigour benchmarked to MIT, LSE, and Stockholm School of Economics. Specialisation fields include applied microeconomics, development economics, financial economics, statistics, and political economy.
Italy uses the salaried-PhD model: candidates receive a tax-favoured fellowship of €18,000–€22,000/year plus an additional 50% top-up for research stays abroad. Tuition is fully waived. Sri Lankan applicants typically enter with a strong MSc in Economics, Statistics, or Mathematics from Colombo, Peradeniya, SLIIT, or a European/American Master's. Bologna has produced economists working at the IMF, World Bank, ECB, and the Bank of Italy.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle Master's degree in Economics, Statistics, Mathematics, Finance, or closely-related field with strong grades (Italian 105/110+ or first-class equivalent).
- check_circle Strong quantitative grounding — econometrics, statistics, calculus, linear algebra, real analysis. Transcripts and Master's thesis are reviewed.
- check_circle Research statement (3-5 pages), CV, writing sample, and 2 academic references.
- check_circle GRE Quantitative score is highly recommended (target 165+); some Sri Lankan candidates also submit GMAT.
English Proficiency

- check_circle Cambridge C1 Advanced or higher.

Career Outcomes & PR
Bologna PhD Economics graduates are eligible for Italy's 12-month post-study residence permit and EU Blue Card. Typical placements: economist at the Bank of Italy, ECB, IMF, World Bank, OECD, European Commission JRC, and increasingly at fintech research units (UniCredit Research, Intesa Sanpaolo Research, Generali Investments). Academic placements at Bologna, Bocconi, Pompeu Fabra, Tilburg, and UK Russell Group universities are common. Sri Lankan returnees take senior positions at the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, World Bank Sri Lanka country office, IPS think tank, and lectureships at Colombo, Peradeniya, Moratuwa.
