Course Overview

Bologna's PhD in Economics and Statistics is among Europe's most respected doctoral programmes in economics, jointly run with the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia and the University of Catania. Four years, fully English-taught, with first-year coursework (microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics) at PhD-level rigour benchmarked to MIT, LSE, and Stockholm School of Economics. Specialisation fields include applied microeconomics, development economics, financial economics, statistics, and political economy.

Italy uses the salaried-PhD model: candidates receive a tax-favoured fellowship of €18,000–€22,000/year plus an additional 50% top-up for research stays abroad. Tuition is fully waived. Sri Lankan applicants typically enter with a strong MSc in Economics, Statistics, or Mathematics from Colombo, Peradeniya, SLIIT, or a European/American Master's.
