Course Overview

SMU's Lee Kong Chian School of Business runs a fully-funded doctoral programme in the American model — coursework, comprehensive examinations, then a dissertation — with specialisations in organisational behaviour and human resources, strategic management, and operations management. Cohorts are deliberately tiny (a handful of students per field per year), and the programme's stated purpose is placing graduates into research faculty positions at business schools, which is the honest way to read a business PhD anywhere.

Funding is the reason this belongs on a Sri Lankan shortlist. Admitted students receive full tuition waiver plus a monthly stipend of roughly SGD 3,300-4,000, medical insurance, and a conference and research allowance for four to five years. There is no self-funded pathway. Singapore's position also matters academically: SMU faculty publish heavily on Asian firms, family business, emerging-market strategy and cross-cultural organisational behaviour, so a South Asian research agenda is an asset here rather than a curiosity.

Entry Requirements

description

Academic

  • check_circle Bachelor's with First Class honours or a Master's with distinction in business, economics, psychology, engineering, mathematics or a related field.
  • check_circle Strong quantitative preparation — statistics, econometrics or research methods — is essential regardless of which specialisation you apply to.
  • check_circle GMAT or GRE is required; competitive applicants typically present GRE Quantitative in the 90th percentile or above, or GMAT 700+.
  • check_circle Research statement identifying your intended specialisation and the faculty whose work you want to build on; a prior research paper or thesis is expected as a writing sample.
  • check_circle Three academic references. Prior research assistantship or publication experience is a significant advantage in a cohort this small.

English Proficiency

  • check_circle IELTS Academic: 7.0 Overall, or TOEFL iBT 100 Overall.
  • check_circle Waived if your Bachelor's or Master's was taught and assessed entirely in English at a recognised institution — Sri Lankan applicants can usually satisfy this with a Medium of Instruction letter, though a strong test score still helps in a competitive round.
  • check_circle An admissions interview, conducted in English and normally online, is part of the final selection.

Career Outcomes & PR

The intended outcome is a tenure-track faculty position, and SMU places graduates into business schools across Asia, Australia, Europe and North America. Others move into research roles at consultancies, central banks and policy institutes, or into people-analytics and strategy functions at large firms. Singapore grants graduates access to the Employment Pass and the Long-Term Visit Pass job-search route, and a Singapore doctorate carries real weight across ASEAN. Sri Lankan returnees are strong candidates for faculty posts at the University of Colombo's Faculty of Management, PIM, Sri Jayewardenepura, Moratuwa's engineering-management programmes and the leading private universities — where PhD-qualified, research-active business faculty remain scarce.
