Course Overview
The University of Amsterdam's PhD in Business Studies is delivered through the Amsterdam Business School (ABS) — UvA's flagship business school, top-60 globally for Business & Management (QS subject 2026) and the highest-ranked Dutch business school. The 4-year doctorate is research-intensive and supervisor-led, with structured coursework in the first year (research methods, econometrics, advanced theory in the candidate's chosen field) followed by three years of dissertation research. Research strengths span entrepreneurship and innovation, organisational behaviour, strategy and international business, finance, accounting, marketing, and operations / information management.
Critical Dutch PhD context: in the Netherlands, PhD candidates are salaried employees rather than fee-paying students. UvA PhDs are hired on the Dutch CAO-NU collective labour agreement, starting around €2,872/month gross (Year 1) rising to €3,670/month gross (Year 4), with 8% holiday allowance, 8.3% year-end bonus, full social security, employer-paid pension, and 41 vacation days per year. This is an employment contract, not a stipend. The 30% tax ruling for under-30 PhDs at Dutch universities applies to qualifying applicants. UvA Business PhDs publish in top-tier journals (Journal of Finance, Academy of Management Journal, Strategic Management Journal) and many graduate directly into tenure-track positions at major business schools — Bocconi, INSEAD, IESE, Cambridge Judge, Imperial College, ESADE, plus the Big Three Dutch business schools (UvA, RSM, Tilburg).
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle Research Master's degree (MSc / MPhil) in Business, Economics, Finance, Operations Research, Statistics or related discipline — Sri Lankan First or strong Second Upper (GPA 3.5+). UvA ABS strongly prefers candidates who have completed a quantitative MSc with significant econometrics / statistics training.
- check_circle Strong Master's thesis evidencing independent research — required.
- check_circle Pre-approved supervisor match required — UvA Business PhDs are position-based; applicants apply to specific posted vacancies on academictransfer.com OR to the ABS structured PhD programme calls (typically January for September intake).
- check_circle Two strong academic references; a research proposal (~5,000 words) aligned to the target faculty's research direction.
- check_circle GMAT / GRE strongly recommended (GMAT 700+ / GRE Q165+ for competitive applicants).
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 7.0 Overall (min 6.5 in each section).
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 100 Overall.
- check_circle Dutch language proficiency is not required — UvA Amsterdam Business School operates entirely in English as the working language of research.
- check_circle Waived if your Bachelor's or Master's was taught and assessed entirely in English — Sri Lankan applicants from UoC, UoM, UoP, SLIIT, NSBM, NIBM and equivalent English-medium degree programmes qualify with an MOI letter.
