Course Overview

The LSE PhD in Economics is a 5-year programme structured as a 1-year MRes followed by a 4-year PhD, with the MRes serving as a deeply technical bridge into research (advanced micro, macro, econometrics at the level expected of US Ivy League first-year PhDs). LSE's Department of Economics is one of the top-3 in Europe alongside Oxford and TSE (Toulouse), with eight Nobel laureates affiliated through their careers and active research clusters in development economics, behavioural economics, public economics, macroeconomics, and labour. The 2026 cohort will be roughly 25-30 students globally — selection is brutally competitive (around 3% acceptance rate).

Sri Lankan applicants come to LSE Economics from UoC / UoM Honours degrees in Economics or Mathematics, often after a UK Master's (LSE MSc Economics, Cambridge MPhil, Oxford MPhil). Funding is the LSE PhD Studentship — fully-covered tuition + £21,000+ annual stipend for 5 years, awarded to nearly all admitted PhD candidates. Sri Lankan PhDs in LSE Economics have routed into the IMF, World Bank, Central Bank of Sri Lanka (Research Department), academic posts at LSE, UCL, Warwick, and the Faculty of Economics at the University of Colombo and University of Peradeniya.

description

Academic

  • check_circle First-class Sri Lankan Bachelor's (Hons) in Economics, Mathematics, Statistics, or a closely-related quantitative discipline — GPA 3.8+ / High First.
  • check_circle Master's in Economics with research training (MSc Econ or MRes equivalent) — strongly preferred but the LSE 5-year track absorbs direct-from-Bachelor's applicants via the integrated MRes year.
  • check_circle GRE General — Quantitative score 167+ (96th percentile) is the de facto requirement, even though officially "recommended".
  • check_circle Research statement (1,000-1,500 words) identifying 2-3 potential supervisors and broad research questions.
  • check_circle Three academic references, ideally including one supervisor of a research dissertation.
