PhD in Computer Science
Department of Computer Science and Technology, University of Cambridge
Course Overview
The PhD in Computer Science at Cambridge sits inside the Department of Computer Science and Technology (the Computer Laboratory), one of the oldest and most cited computing research departments in the world — the place where the term "computer scientist" first appeared. The 3-4 year research degree is supervisor-led, meaning admission is contingent on identifying and being accepted by a faculty supervisor in one of the department's research groups (Artificial Intelligence, Security, Systems Research, Programming, Logic and Semantics, Computer Architecture, Graphics & Interaction, NLP, Energy & Environment). Cohort size is roughly 70 PhD students per intake across all areas, with the AI / NLP groups being the most competitive.
Sri Lankan applicants typically arrive at Cambridge after a strong UoM or University of Colombo undergraduate in CS or Engineering plus 1-2 years in research-adjacent industry (WSO2, MillenniumIT, Mitra Innovation) or after a UK / US Master's. The route is almost always fully-funded through a combination of Gates Cambridge, Cambridge Trust, the Vice-Chancellor's award, and EPSRC departmental studentships — paying for a Cambridge PhD out of pocket is extremely rare. On graduation, Sri Lankan PhDs route into research roles at DeepMind, Google Brain, Microsoft Research Cambridge, ARM, and into academic posts back home at UoM, UoC, IIT, and SLIIT.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle First-class Sri Lankan Bachelor's (Hons) in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics or a related discipline — minimum GPA 3.7 / First Class equivalent.
- check_circle Master's by research strongly preferred (MPhil or research-based MSc) — direct-entry from Bachelor's is possible but rare and requires exceptional research output.
- check_circle Pre-approved supervisor match: applicants MUST contact a faculty member in their target research group before the application window opens (usually August-October) and confirm willingness to supervise.
- check_circle Research proposal (5-10 pages) aligned with the supervisor's current research clusters.
- check_circle Strong references from research supervisors; evidence of published work (peer-reviewed papers, workshops, or substantial open-source contributions) is highly valued.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 7.5 Overall (min 7.0 in each section).
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 110 Overall (min 25 in each section).
- check_circle Waived if your Bachelor's or Master's was taught and assessed entirely in English at a recognised university — many Sri Lankan applicants from UoM, UoC, IIT, and overseas degrees qualify with an MOI letter.

Career Outcomes & PR
Eligible for the 2-year UK Graduate Route after PhD completion. Cambridge CS PhDs route into industry research labs (Google DeepMind, Microsoft Research Cambridge, Meta AI, Amazon Web Services Research, ARM) at £80,000-£150,000 starting (LKR 32M-60M/yr), or into postdoctoral and lectureship positions at Cambridge, Imperial, Oxford, ETH Zurich, and US R1 universities (£40,000-£55,000 postdoc, LKR 16M-22M/yr). Sri Lankan returnees typically take senior R&D roles at WSO2, Mitra Innovation, LSEG Tech Colombo, or join faculty at UoM Computer Science and Engineering, University of Colombo School of Computing (UCSC), and IIT.
