PhD in Communication Studies

The doctoral programme in Communication Studies at the Paris Lodron University of Salzburg is a three-year, 180-ECTS research degree hosted by the Department of Communication Studies in the Faculty of Cultural and Social Sciences. Salzburg's department is one of the established centres for empirical media research in the German-speaking world, and the doctorate reflects that: a supervised dissertation, a public exposé defence early in year one, doctoral colloquia, and a methods spine that expects genuine competence in quantitative content analysis, survey design and increasingly computational text methods. Research concentrations include political communication and public opinion, journalism studies and media systems, digital and platform communication, media effects, and strategic and organisational communication.

Austria is one of the few places in Western Europe where a doctorate remains genuinely cheap to register for — non-EU tuition is €726.72 per semester, roughly €1,453 a year, which over three years costs less than a single semester at most UK or US institutions. That does not mean it is free to do. There is no stipend attached to enrolment, so funding comes from one of three places: a prae-doc university assistant post at the department (an employment contract, typically 30 hours a week at around €2,700 a month gross, carrying teaching and administrative duties), a position on an FWF Austrian Science Fund project, or an OeAD scholarship. We tell Sri Lankan applicants to treat securing one of those as part of the application, not as an afterthought.

Language deserves an honest note. Salzburg's doctorate in communication can be completed in English with the supervisor's agreement, and international candidates do so, but the department's default working language is German, much of the seminar and colloquium life runs in German, and prae-doc assistant posts that involve teaching will require it. If your plan depends on a funded assistantship, plan on German B2 to C1. If you are self-funding or externally funded and working in English with an English-friendly supervisor, that constraint largely disappears. Confirm with your prospective supervisor before you apply — this single question determines whether the programme is realistic for you.
