Course Overview

Concordia's PhD in Communication is delivered through the Department of Communication Studies as part of the Joint Doctoral Programme in Communication, run with Université de Montréal and Université du Québec à Montréal. That structure is the point: a doctoral candidate registered at Concordia takes seminars, sits on committees and draws supervisors across three universities, giving Montréal one of the deepest concentrations of communication scholarship in North America. Research strengths span media and cultural studies, political economy of communication, media arts and technology, feminist and postcolonial media theory, and the study of platforms and algorithmic culture — the last supported by Concordia's Milieux Institute for Arts, Culture and Technology, which houses research-creation labs where doctoral work can take the form of a documented practice as well as a written thesis.

The finances are the reason we recommend Concordia to Sri Lankan doctoral applicants ahead of many better-known North American departments. Concordia applies an international tuition fee remission to PhD students, which reduces international fees to the Quebec-resident rate — in practice around CAD 4,000 to 5,000 a year including compulsory fees, against the CAD 25,000-plus an international doctoral student pays at many Canadian universities. On top of that, accepted candidates normally receive a funding package built from Concordia's Graduate Student Support Programme, entrance awards, and teaching or research assistantships, commonly worth CAD 20,000 or more a year. A Sri Lankan candidate can realistically complete a Canadian doctorate here without external borrowing.

Montréal itself is a real advantage and a real adjustment. Rents remain the lowest of Canada's major cities, the winter is severe, and Quebec operates in French — the doctoral programme runs in English at Concordia and you may write your thesis in English or French, but daily life, and the Quebec immigration pathway, both reward learning French. Quebec's PEQ graduate stream is a fast route to permanent residence for graduates who reach French proficiency, so treat French as an investment rather than an obstacle.

Entry Requirements

description

Academic

  • check_circle A completed master's degree in communication, media studies, journalism, sociology, cultural studies or a cognate field, with a minimum B+ standing (GPA 3.3+ from a Sri Lankan university).
  • check_circle A research-based master's thesis is strongly preferred — Concordia weighs demonstrated independent research above coursework grades.
  • check_circle A statement of research interest identifying at least one prospective supervisor at Concordia, UdeM or UQAM whose work genuinely connects to yours.
  • check_circle Two academic references from research-active supervisors, plus a writing sample (a thesis chapter or a published article).
  • check_circle Sri Lankan applicants with a master's from Colombo, Kelaniya or Sri Jayewardenepura, or an overseas MA in media or communication, are the usual profile; journalism or media practice experience strengthens research-creation applications.
  • check_circle Apply by December 1 — Concordia's funding decisions are attached to the same round, and applying later effectively means applying unfunded.

English Proficiency

  • check_circle IELTS Academic: 7.0 Overall (min 6.5 in each band).
  • check_circle TOEFL iBT: 90 Overall (min 20 in each section).
  • check_circle Cambridge C1 Advanced or PTE Academic 65 also accepted.
  • check_circle Waived if your bachelor's or master's degree was completed in a programme taught and examined entirely in English — Sri Lankan applicants from English-medium university programmes qualify with a Medium of Instruction letter.
  • check_circle French is not required for admission or for the thesis, but it materially improves life in Montréal and is required for the Quebec PEQ permanent-residence stream.

Career Outcomes & PR

Graduates of the Joint Doctoral Programme place into faculty posts across Canadian, US and European communication and media departments, into public broadcasting and cultural policy (CBC/Radio-Canada, the Canada Council for the Arts, Canadian Heritage), into platform and technology policy research, and into the research arms of NGOs working on media freedom and digital rights. Doctoral graduates of a Canadian university degree programme are eligible for a three-year Post-Graduation Work Permit, and PGWP holders in university degree programmes remain exempt from the field-of-study restrictions applied to college programmes — though applicants now need CLB 7 in English or NCLC 7 in French. Quebec's PEQ graduate stream offers a fast provincial route to permanent residence for those who reach the required French level. Sri Lankan returnees are strong candidates for professorial posts in the mass communication departments at Colombo, Kelaniya and Sri Jayewardenepura, and for research leadership at Verité Research, the Centre for Policy Alternatives and Internews-funded media-development programmes.
