Master of Teaching
University of Toronto — Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE)
Course Overview
The University of Toronto's Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) is Canada's largest and highest-ranked education school — #1 in Canada and consistently top 10 globally for Education (QS Subject Rankings 2025). The Master of Teaching (MT) is OISE's professional teacher-preparation programme leading to Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) certification — the licensing body required to teach in Ontario public schools. The 2-year programme combines coursework in pedagogy, curriculum, child development, and educational research with three teaching practica (12+ weeks total in Ontario schools across the Primary/Junior or Intermediate/Senior divisions, depending on track). Unlike Ontario's older Bachelor of Education, the MT is research-informed and includes an integrated Master's research paper or thesis.
Sri Lankan applicants from BEd / BA Education / NIE Diploma in Teaching backgrounds (Colombo, Kelaniya, Peradeniya, J'pura, OUSL) target the MT for its dual credential — graduates leave with both an Ontario teacher's licence (OCT registration) and a Master's degree, qualifying them for senior teaching, curriculum coordination, and academic-track roles. Canada's PGWP gives 3 years of open work after graduation; combined with the 1-year qualifying period for Canadian Experience Class PR, this is the most straightforward teacher-to-PR pathway of any major destination. Ontario teacher starting salaries CAD 53,000-65,000 (LKR 12.45M-15.27M/yr) rising to CAD 100,000+ at the top of the grid.
