Course Overview
The Master of Science in Engineering in Computer Science is the full-time, on-campus master's run by the Department of Computer Science in Johns Hopkins University's Whiting School of Engineering, at the Homewood campus in Baltimore. The degree is completed either as eight approved graduate courses plus a faculty-guided research project, or as ten approved courses without one, and the department's stated average time to degree is three semesters — so most students finish in about eighteen months rather than two full years. Optional concentrations in artificial intelligence and in human language technology are available.
Hopkins' computer science department is best known internationally for security, natural language processing, computer vision and medical robotics, and students concentrate through its research centres rather than through rigid tracks. The Information Security Institute, the Center for Language and Speech Processing — one of the founding institutions of modern statistical NLP — the Laboratory for Computational Sensing and Robotics, and the Malone Center for Engineering in Healthcare all take master's students onto projects. The medical connection is the real differentiator: Hopkins Medicine sits across the city, and computational work on surgical robotics, clinical NLP and medical imaging has a route to genuine clinical collaborators.
Cost is the honest constraint, and it needs stating plainly. The department published full-time tuition of USD 66,670 for the 2025-26 year (USD 33,335 per semester), and MSE students are explicitly not eligible for departmental financial aid — this is a self-funded degree unless you win an external scholarship. Baltimore is significantly cheaper to live in than Boston, New York or the Bay Area, and the three-semester average length means the total bill is smaller than a two-year programme at the same rate, but a Sri Lankan family should still plan for a commitment above LKR 40 million across the degree.
What buys that back is the post-study position. Computer Science is a STEM Designated Degree Program, so an F-1 graduate is eligible for 12 months of Optional Practical Training plus the 24-month STEM extension — up to three years of US work authorisation, and three separate H-1B lottery entries. Admission needs coursework equivalent to a BS in Computer Science: applicants from other fields must show intermediate programming in C++ and Java, data structures, computer systems fundamentals and the mathematical foundations of CS. There is no GRE requirement and no published GPA minimum, which puts unusual weight on the statement of purpose and the two letters of recommendation.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle Coursework equivalent to a US BS in Computer Science. A four-year Sri Lankan Bachelor's (SLQF Level 6, UGC-recognised) in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or Software Engineering is the standard route.
- check_circle Applicants from other fields must demonstrate intermediate programming in C++ and Java, data structures, computer systems fundamentals, and the mathematical foundations of computer science.
- check_circle No minimum GPA is published, which makes the rest of the file decisive — a First or strong Class II Upper from Moratuwa, UCSC, Peradeniya, SLIIT or IIT with evidence of project or research work is the realistic profile.
- check_circle Two letters of recommendation and a one-to-two page statement of purpose naming specific faculty or research centres.
- check_circle GRE is not required. There is no separate international deadline — the Fall round closes on the same date for everyone, so allow time for F-1 visa processing from Colombo after the admission decision.
English Proficiency
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 100 Overall or above.
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 7.0 Overall or above.
- check_circle Cambridge English is accepted by the Whiting School; PTE is not listed among the accepted tests.
- check_circle Duolingo English Test and TOEFL Essentials are explicitly not accepted.
- check_circle Scores must be sent directly by the testing agency and are valid for two years. Whiting School operates a test-waiver policy, but its exact conditions are not published in an accessible form — Sri Lankan applicants should assume a test is required and confirm any waiver in writing before skipping it.

Career Outcomes & PR
Computer Science is a STEM Designated Degree Program, so F-1 graduates get 12 months of Optional Practical Training plus a 24-month STEM extension — up to three years of US work authorisation and three H-1B lottery entries. Career destinations the department names for its graduates include Amazon, Google, Bank of America, IMC Trading, Bloomberg L.P., Intuit, Deloitte and Roblox, and selected master's students take a paid summer internship at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory. The Baltimore-Washington corridor also carries a dense cluster of security and defence-adjacent research employers. Median US starting salaries for CS master's graduates in software and machine-learning roles run above USD 110,000. Sri Lankan returnees take senior engineering, ML and security-architecture roles at WSO2, IFS R&D, Sysco LABS, Virtusa, 99X, MillenniumIT and the Colombo R&D centres of multinationals, and the research-project route feeds directly into PhD admission.
