Purdue's Department of Computer Science in West Lafayette, Indiana, is one of the oldest in the United States — founded in 1962, the first standalone computer science department in the country — and consistently sits inside the American top 20 for the subject. The residential MS in Computer Science is a 30-credit graduate degree, taken as ten courses on the non-thesis route or as eight courses plus at least six credits of thesis research. The department describes the typical completion time as three to four semesters, so most students finish in about two years and well-prepared students can finish faster.
