Course Overview

The MSc in Urban Studies and Planning is a joint Master's run by Aalto University together with the University of Helsinki, combining Aalto's world-leading design and technology strengths with social-science and geography perspectives. Aalto — formed from Finland's top technology, business, and art-and-design universities — is a global leader in design (its School of Arts, Design and Architecture is among the best in the world). The two-year, English-taught programme is interdisciplinary: students combine spatial planning, urban design, sustainability, and social science to tackle real challenges in cities, from housing to climate adaptation.

Finland is an increasingly attractive, well-priced destination for Sri Lankan students: tuition is modest, the country is safe and highly digital, and graduates can stay for up to 2 years after study to look for work, with a residence-permit pathway to the labour market. Aalto's strong links to Helsinki's planning bodies, design firms, and the Nordic smart-city ecosystem give graduates access to a well-developed urban-development sector.

Career Outcomes & PR

Finland allows graduates to stay up to 2 years to seek work, with an EU Blue Card / residence-permit pathway to PR. Aalto urban-studies graduates work in city planning departments, design and architecture firms, sustainability consultancies, and smart-city / mobility projects across Finland and the Nordics. Finland's shortage of skilled graduates makes staying on realistic; graduate salaries typically start €38,000–€45,000.
