MSc Tourism, Society and Environment
Wageningen University & Research
Course Overview
Wageningen University & Research (WUR) is the world's #1 ranked university for Agriculture and Forestry and consistently top 5 globally in Environmental Sciences (QS Subject Rankings 2025) — a unique research-intensive university with the entire institution focused on life sciences, food systems, environment, and sustainability. The MSc Tourism, Society and Environment sits within the Department of Environmental Sciences and is one of the few Master's globally that treats tourism explicitly as a sustainability-and-society discipline (not a business school subject). The 2-year English-taught programme covers tourism geography, sustainable destination development, community-based tourism, ecotourism and protected area management, tourism policy, and a major thesis or industry placement — often conducted with partners like UNWTO, the European Travel Commission, IUCN, or specific destination management organisations.
Sri Lankan applicants with backgrounds in Geography, Tourism, Environmental Science, Sociology, or Development Studies (Peradeniya, Ruhuna, Sabaragamuwa Tourism, Uva Wellassa, Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management graduates) choose Wageningen for the sustainability-research positioning — Sri Lanka's tourism industry is increasingly oriented around eco-tourism, community-based tourism (Madulkelle, Belihul Oya), and wildlife tourism (Yala, Wilpattu, Sinharaja UNESCO), and Wageningen graduates command serious credibility in this space. The Netherlands offers a 1-year zoekjaar visa for post-study job search.
