MSc TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages)
University of Edinburgh (Moray House School of Education)
Course Overview
Edinburgh's MSc TESOL at the Moray House School of Education is one of the longest-running and most internationally-recognised TESOL master's degrees in the UK — Moray House traces back to 1835 and the TESOL programme has been running for over forty years. Edinburgh is a QS top-30 global university and consistently top-5 in the UK for Education research (REF 2021). The one-year, full-time MSc is taught in central Edinburgh and is structured around three cores (Language and the Learner; Methodologies for TESOL Research; Course and Materials Design) plus six elective slots and a 15,000-word supervised dissertation.
The cohort is deliberately mixed between pre-service applicants (Sri Lankan A/L-to-degree graduates with no classroom experience yet) and in-service teachers (British Council teachers, international school staff, university lecturers from Sri Lanka, Vietnam, China, Saudi Arabia). For Sri Lankan applicants from English-medium degree backgrounds — English Literature, Linguistics, Education, Translation Studies — this is one of the cleanest paths into international school teaching, British Council Sri Lanka programme leadership, IELTS examining, and university-level ESP/EAP roles.
Graduates qualify for the 2-year UK Graduate Route automatically — giving Sri Lankan applicants space to land a UK teaching position (state secondary, FE college, EAP teaching at UK universities) and convert to a Skilled Worker visa. Edinburgh's TESOL alumni network is heavily clustered in Hong Kong, Singapore, the Middle East, and Sri Lankan international schools (Asian International School, Elizabeth Moir, Overseas School of Colombo).
Entry Requirements

- check_circle Recognised bachelor's degree with a UK 2:1 equivalent — Sri Lankan applicants typically need a Second Upper / GPA 3.0+ from a recognised university.
- check_circle Degree in English, Linguistics, Education, Modern Languages, or a related discipline preferred. Non-cognate applicants accepted with relevant teaching experience.
- check_circle Sri Lankan A/L applicants who have completed an English-medium degree (BA English, BA Education, English Literature, Linguistics) at Peradeniya, Kelaniya, Colombo, Jaffna, SUSL, or recognised private institutions qualify directly.

- check_circle Teaching experience is NOT required for admission — about half of each cohort is pre-service.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 7.0 Overall (min 6.5 in each component) — Moray House sets a higher bar than the university floor.
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 100 Overall (min 23 in each component).
- check_circle PTE Academic: 70 Overall (min 62 in each component).
- check_circle Waiver path: if your bachelor's degree was taught and assessed entirely in English at a recognised institution within the last three years, the requirement is waived on submission of an MOI letter from your university registrar — most Sri Lankan applicants from English-medium BA / BSc programmes qualify.
