Course Overview
Nottingham's School of Education is ranked among the UK's strongest for education research (top 10 in the REF for research power) and the MA Education is a flexible one-year programme for teachers, education officers and graduates moving into curriculum design, policy, leadership or further research. Sri Lankan applicants — practising teachers, NIE / provincial education officers, and recent graduates from Colombo, Peradeniya, OUSL or NSBM — use it to build international credentials in pedagogy, assessment and educational leadership.
The MA lets students shape pathways across applied linguistics and TESOL, leadership and management, special and inclusive education, and learning, technology and education. It combines taught modules with a supervised dissertation and is designed to feed directly into EdD / PhD study. Nottingham's strength in teacher education and its long-running work on assessment and school improvement make it a credible base for those returning to senior roles in Sri Lankan schools, international schools or the education NGO sector.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle Bachelor's degree (2:2 or above) in education or a related field — Sri Lankan bachelor's degrees from Colombo, Peradeniya, Kelaniya, OUSL, NSBM and others accepted.
- check_circle Relevant teaching or education experience is welcomed but not always required.
- check_circle Personal statement on your education interests and career goals.
- check_circle Two references and certified transcripts.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 Overall (no band below 6.0).
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 87 Overall.
- check_circle PTE Academic: 71 Overall.
- check_circle Waived if your bachelor's degree was taught and assessed entirely in English (most Sri Lankan English-medium graduates qualify with an MOI letter).

Career Outcomes & PR
MA Education graduates are eligible for the 2-year UK Graduate Route. The degree feeds into curriculum development, education consultancy, international-school leadership, and EdD / PhD progression. Nottingham education graduates work with bodies such as the British Council, Cambridge International, Pearson, and international school groups across the Gulf and Asia. Sri Lankan returnees move into senior teaching, school leadership, NIE / provincial education roles, international-school posts in Colombo, and education-NGO programme work.
