MSc Sustainable Energy
University of Malta
Course Overview
University of Malta's MSc Sustainable Energy is delivered through the Institute for Sustainable Energy, located at the Marsaxlokk campus next to the Delimara power station — Malta's main grid-tied generation asset. The 90-ECTS programme spans three semesters (18 months) and combines taught modules with a substantial dissertation often co-supervised with industry partners (Enemalta, the Maltese national grid operator). Core modules cover solar PV systems, wind energy, energy storage, smart grids, energy economics, building energy management, and renewable policy frameworks.
Sri Lankan applicants from Electrical, Mechanical, Energy, or Environmental Engineering Bachelor's backgrounds (Moratuwa, Peradeniya, Ruhuna, OUSL, NSBM Plymouth-partnered programmes) treat this MSc as a route into the EU renewable-energy transition. Malta's Mediterranean climate makes it an active solar PV deployment market. The 6-month post-study residence permit, plus Malta's low EU Blue Card threshold (~€26,000/yr in 2025), enables onward EU mobility into Germany, Netherlands, Spain renewable sectors. Returnees route into Sri Lankan renewable-energy roles at the Sustainable Energy Authority, CEB, Lanka Electricity Company, WindForce, Vidullanka, and renewables consulting at Ernst & Young, PwC, and KPMG.
