MSc in Software, Web and Cloud
Tampere University
Course Overview
Tampere University's MSc in Software, Web and Cloud is delivered through the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences. The 2-year, 120-ECTS programme is application-focused and covers modern software engineering practices (agile, DevOps), distributed systems, cloud-native architectures (Kubernetes, serverless), web technologies (modern JavaScript frameworks, GraphQL), database systems including NoSQL and data engineering pipelines, microservices, and a substantial Master's thesis usually completed with a local tech employer. Tampere has the largest concentration of Finnish tech engineering outside the Helsinki metro area — Nokia Networks (HQ), Sandvik, Kalmar, Solita, Vincit, plus a growing start-up scene.
Sri Lankan applicants from CS / SE / IT first-class or upper-second Bachelor's backgrounds (Moratuwa, Colombo UCSC, SLIIT, NSBM, NIBM, IIT) treat this MSc as a route into European software engineering at a lower fee tier than Aalto / Helsinki (€12,000/yr) and at lower Tampere living costs (€10,000-€11,000/yr). Finland's 2-year post-study job-search residence permit (one of the longest in the EU) and the EU Blue Card pathway (~€3,827/month gross threshold in 2025) make permanent EU mobility realistic. Returnees route into senior software engineering, cloud / DevOps, and full-stack engineering roles at WSO2, IFS R&D, Virtusa, MillenniumIT, Sysco LABS, Dialog Axiata.
