MSc in Information Technology — Computer Engineering
Åbo Akademi University
Deadline detail: January 21 (national joint application round, opens January 7)
Course Overview
Åbo Akademi University runs nine English-taught master's programmes, and Computer Engineering is one of two tracks inside the Master's Degree Programme in Information Technology — the other being Computer Science. The Computer Engineering track is offered at both the Turku and Vaasa campuses, runs two years and 120 ECTS, and covers embedded and cyber-physical systems, computer architecture, real-time and distributed systems, networks and system design, and the software engineering that sits on top of them.
Åbo Akademi is Finland's Swedish-language university, but its master's programmes are delivered in English and its international cohorts are genuinely international. Turku is Finland's oldest city and carries a substantial engineering and marine-technology base; Vaasa is the Nordic region's largest energy-technology cluster, home to Wärtsilä, ABB and Danfoss operations, which gives the Vaasa track unusually direct industrial contact.
The fee structure changed for students admitted from 2026 onward and is worth understanding precisely. The sticker price is €12,000 a year. Students who accept their place and pay by the deadline stated in the admission letter receive a €4,000 early-commitment discount in year one, and a further €4,000 waiver is applied automatically in year two — so the effective cost is around €8,000 a year, €16,000 across the degree. Miss the acceptance deadline and you pay the full €12,000. The older tiered 80% and 100% scholarships are explicitly discontinued for 2026 and later admissions.
Admission runs through Finland's national joint application system at Studyinfo.fi in a single window from 7 to 21 January — a hard, early, once-a-year deadline that catches out applicants used to rolling admissions. The programme is competitive: 40 study places against 1,241 applications in the most recent cycle, with candidates scored on a points rubric covering application quality, degree alignment and supporting studies before the top applicants are shortlisted.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle A completed university-level Bachelor's degree (SLQF Level 6, UGC-recognised or equivalent) in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or a closely related field.
- check_circle Expected background: mathematics; algorithms, data structures, operating systems, networks and compilers; computer architecture or network and system design; and programming in C, C++, Java or similar. Submit full module descriptions so the rubric can be scored accurately.
- check_circle No minimum GPA is published. Selection is by a points rubric scoring application quality, major alignment and supporting studies from 1 to 5 each — 40 places were offered against 1,241 applications in the most recent cycle, so the application itself is the differentiator.
- check_circle Applications go through the Finnish national joint round at Studyinfo.fi (Opintopolku) between 7 and 21 January. There is no second round, no rolling admission and no late entry.
- check_circle Certified, translated transcripts and degree certificate. Verify whether your intake requires original documents to be posted, since Finnish universities are strict on document authentication.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 Overall with no band below 5.5.
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 92 Overall (the Home Edition is accepted).
- check_circle PTE Academic: 62 Overall.
- check_circle Cambridge C1 Advanced at grade A, B or C, or C2 Proficiency with a minimum C1 result.
- check_circle A waiver applies where a Bachelor's or higher was taught and assessed entirely in English in a listed country. The list covers the EU/EEA, Switzerland, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK, the USA and a further set of countries added in 2024 — whether Sri Lanka is on that expanded list could not be confirmed, so check with admissions before deciding to skip the test.
- check_circle No Finnish or Swedish is required for the degree. Free language courses are offered and are genuinely useful for the post-study job search.

Career Outcomes & PR
Finland grants graduates a two-year residence permit to look for work or start a business after completing a degree — one of the longest job-search windows in the EU — and time on a study permit counts toward permanent residence. Åbo Akademi names CTO, Senior R&D Engineer, Lead Developer, Security Expert and System Designer among the roles this programme leads to, alongside project management and advisory work. The Finnish technology market is deep for the country's size: Nokia, Wärtsilä, ABB Finland, Danfoss, Kone, Vaisala and Supercell, plus the marine-technology cluster around Turku and the energy-technology cluster around Vaasa where the Computer Engineering track has its second campus. Sri Lankan returnees route into embedded, platform and systems engineering at WSO2, IFS R&D, Sysco LABS, Virtusa, MillenniumIT, Dialog Axiata and Zone24x7, and the embedded-systems specialisation is less common in the Colombo market than general software skills, which makes it differentiating.
