MSc Sociology and Social Research
University of Milan
Course Overview
The University of Milan (Università degli Studi di Milano, La Statale) is one of Italy's largest and most respected public universities, and its English-taught MSc in Sociology and Social Research trains rigorous, methods-strong social scientists. The two-year programme combines contemporary sociological theory with serious quantitative and qualitative research training: survey design, statistical analysis, comparative methods, social-network analysis, and applied research on migration, inequality, work, and urban change. Milan — Italy's economic and innovation capital — offers an exceptional living laboratory and strong links to research institutes, foundations, and the data and consulting sectors.
Sri Lankan applicants with a Bachelor's in Sociology, Political Science, Economics, Anthropology, Demography, or related social sciences fit well, and English-medium Sri Lankan degrees can waive the IELTS requirement via an MOI letter. Italy's income-assessed (ISEE) tuition keeps costs low, and Milan's labour market is the strongest in the country. Italy grants graduates a 12-month post-study residence permit, and the methodological depth of this degree opens careers in social research, policy evaluation, data analysis, and a research PhD.
