Course Overview

Ca' Foscari University of Venice runs Comparative International Relations as a two-year, 120-CFU laurea magistrale in class LM-52. It is comparative by design: rather than teaching international relations from a single national vantage point, it pairs theory and international law with deep area studies, drawing on Ca' Foscari's unusual institutional strength in Asian and Middle Eastern studies — the university has taught Asian languages and politics since the nineteenth century.

The programme is split into five curricula, and only two of them — European Union Studies and Global Studies — are taught entirely in English. The other three (the Americas, East Asia and Eastern Europe tracks) are delivered in Italian. A Sri Lankan applicant must therefore enrol on one of the two English curricula, and should say which one in the application. Coursework across both spans international relations theory, international and European law, the history of international relations, international economics and political economy, research methods, and a supervised thesis. Language study is embedded rather than decorative, with Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, Russian and the major European languages available.

The cost is the reason this route is worth a serious look. Non-EU students who do not file Italian ISEE income documentation pay a flat annual fee set by their country group — for Sri Lanka that is €1,300 a year for 2026/27, and the figure is inclusive of the €192 regional tax and the €16 stamp duty. Applicants who do file ISEE can pay more, up to roughly €2,636. The substantive budget is Venice living costs and the roughly €6,900 annual proof of funds the study visa requires; even so, two years at Ca' Foscari costs less than a single UK taught MA once living costs are counted.

Admission is open access rather than capped, but it is conditional on a credit check: applicants need at least 36 CFU spread across law, economics, history and political science, with a minimum of 6 in each of the four and 12 more distributed among them. Shortfalls have to be made up through single-course examinations before enrolment. The natural applicant is a Sri Lankan BA in International Relations, Political Science, Economics, History, Law or Languages from Colombo, Peradeniya, Kelaniya, Jayewardenepura or an affiliated UK programme — and students aiming at the Sri Lanka Foreign Service examination or the UN and INGO sector in Colombo find the comparative structure more usable than a purely theoretical IR degree.

Entry Requirements

description

Academic

  • check_circle A three-year (or longer) Bachelor's degree (SLQF Level 6, UGC-recognised or equivalent) in any discipline, subject to the credit check below.
  • check_circle At least 36 CFU in the prior degree covering law, economics, history and political science — a minimum of 6 CFU in each of the four, plus 12 further CFU distributed across them. Shortfalls must be made up through single-course examinations before enrolment, so identify them early.
  • check_circle You must apply to one of the two English-taught curricula — European Union Studies or Global Studies. The Americas, East Asia and Eastern Europe curricula are taught in Italian.
  • check_circle Curricular-requirement evaluation runs in three sessions across the year through Ca' Foscari's online application portal, so an early session gives more time to fix a credit shortfall.
  • check_circle Non-EU applicants resident abroad must complete Universitaly pre-enrolment by the September deadline and hold a Declaration of Value (DoV) or CIMEA statement of comparability; certified translated transcripts are required.

English Proficiency

  • check_circle English at CEFR B2 is mandatory and must be certified at enrolment — without it, enrolment cannot be completed.
  • check_circle Ca' Foscari's B2 equivalence table accepts IELTS Academic in the 5.5-6.5 range and TOEFL iBT in the 72-94 range. It publishes a range rather than a single cut score and does not specify sub-scores.
  • check_circle Cambridge English B2 First, PTE Academic 59-75 and Trinity ISE II are also accepted.
  • check_circle An exemption route based on prior English-medium education exists, but its criteria are not clearly published — Sri Lankan applicants should hold a certificate unless an exemption is confirmed in writing.
  • check_circle A second language is part of the curriculum rather than an entry condition; beginners' tracks are available and free Italian courses are offered to international students.

Career Outcomes & PR

Italy grants a 12-month post-study job-seeker residence permit (permesso per attesa occupazione) that converts to a work permit on employment. Ca' Foscari points its graduates toward international organisations and multilateral institutions, NGOs, think-tanks and research institutes, and roles in communications and public relations, data research and analysis for cooperation and sustainability projects, international-relations analysis, and project management on EU, Eastern European, East Asian and Americas portfolios. Rome hosts FAO and IFAD, and the embedded second language makes graduates unusually employable on trade and regional desks. Sri Lankan returnees route into the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Sri Lanka Foreign Service examination track, the UN and World Bank country offices in Colombo, the Asian Development Bank, INGOs such as Oxfam, Save the Children and the Red Cross, policy institutes including the Institute of Policy Studies and the Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute, and the public-affairs functions of large Sri Lankan conglomerates.
