Master's Programme in Robotics and Control
Umeå University
Course Overview
Umeå University's Master's Programme in Robotics and Control is a two-year, 120-credit degree taught in English at the Umeå campus in northern Sweden. It is a genuine control-and-robotics engineering degree rather than a computer science course with robots attached: the first year covers artificial intelligence, control systems, mechatronics, machine vision and image processing, and the second year splits into an Electronics profile (control theory, sensor fusion, robotics applications) and a Computing Science profile (AI, machine learning, programming), before a 30-credit thesis.
The degree is awarded in Computing Science or Electronics with a specialisation in Robotics and Control, so graduates come out with a recognisable engineering main field rather than a niche label. The applied focus is on autonomous systems, field robotics and embedded systems — which is a natural fit for Sweden, where the robotics market is driven less by consumer products than by heavy industry: forestry machinery, mining equipment, construction automation and factory process control.
Tuition for non-EU students is SEK 152,300 a year, SEK 304,600 across the two years, with a first instalment of SEK 76,150 due around 10 May before the August start. There is also a SEK 900 application fee. That is roughly LKR 4.87 million a year — not cheap, but Swedish master's degrees are two years of research-grade engineering rather than a compressed taught year, and Umeå living costs are well below Stockholm's.
The entry requirements are precise and worth checking against your transcript before anything else. Umeå asks for a Bachelor's of at least 180 ECTS including 15 ECTS of computing science with at least 7.5 in programming, 7.5 ECTS of digital electronics, logic or system programming, 30 ECTS of mathematics covering analysis, linear algebra and statistics, and 7.5 ECTS in control theory, signal processing, numerical methods or differential equations. Sri Lankan graduates in Electronic, Electrical, Mechatronic or Computer Engineering from Moratuwa, Peradeniya, Ruhuna, SLIIT or an affiliated UK programme usually meet these — but the credit count is checked line by line, so submit full module descriptions.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle A Bachelor's degree or equivalent first-cycle qualification of at least 180 ECTS (SLQF Level 6, UGC-recognised or equivalent).
- check_circle At least 15 ECTS in Computing Science, of which a minimum of 7.5 ECTS must be programming, or equivalent.
- check_circle At least 7.5 ECTS in digital electronics, logic or system programming, or equivalent.
- check_circle At least 30 ECTS in Mathematics, including analysis, linear algebra and statistics; plus at least 7.5 ECTS in control theory, signal processing, numerical methods or differential equations.
- check_circle Applications go through Sweden's national portal, universityadmissions.se — the round opens on 16 October and closes on 15 January, with supporting documents and the SEK 900 application fee due by 1 February, results on 30 March and the first tuition instalment around 10 May. Selection is by completed academic credits at the application date.
English Proficiency
- check_circle Swedish upper-secondary English 6 (level 2) is the standard, evidenced by one of the following.
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 Overall with no individual band below 5.5.
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 90 Overall with Writing 20 or above for tests taken up to 20 January 2026; from 21 January 2026 the revised scale requires 4.5 overall with no section below 4.
- check_circle Cambridge C1 Advanced at 180 or above.
- check_circle Sweden's waiver routes cover a prior degree of at least 60 ECTS taught in English from the EU/EEA, Switzerland or a specified list of English-speaking and Commonwealth countries, upper-secondary education from a designated country list, and a Bachelor's with English as the main subject. Sri Lanka's position on the current list changes between cycles — check it before deciding to skip the test.
- check_circle Swedish is not required for the degree, though it helps materially with part-time work and the post-study job search.

Career Outcomes & PR
Sweden grants graduates a twelve-month residence permit to look for work or start a business after a degree, converting to a work permit on a qualifying offer. Umeå describes the destinations for this programme as the development of unmanned vehicles, construction automation, mining equipment, factory process control, computer-vision products, simulation software and wearable systems, alongside the PhD and academic route. Swedish industry is unusually robotics-heavy for its size — ABB Robotics, Volvo, Scania, Epiroc and Sandvik in mining automation, Komatsu Forest in Umeå itself, plus Ericsson and a strong autonomous-systems research base. Sri Lankan returnees route into automation and control engineering at MAS Holdings, Brandix and the apparel sector's automation programmes, Zone24x7, Dialog Axiata, Ceylon Electricity Board and the industrial-automation integrators, and into university teaching and research in mechatronics at Moratuwa and Peradeniya.
