MSc Civil Engineering
Luleå University of Technology
Course Overview
Luleå University of Technology (LTU) is Scandinavia's northernmost technical university and a research powerhouse in infrastructure, cold-climate construction, and sustainable building. Its English-taught MSc in Civil Engineering offers specialisations such as Structural Engineering and Infrastructure, with strong emphasis on sustainable materials, timber and steel structures, and building in harsh environments. LTU works closely with major Nordic construction and mining firms and Europe's green-industrial transition (LKAB's fossil-free steel, Northvolt-era battery infrastructure), giving students access to some of the continent's most ambitious civil-engineering projects.
Sri Lankan civil-engineering graduates choose LTU for a globally respected Swedish technical master's, English-medium delivery, and exposure to sustainable-construction methods increasingly relevant to Sri Lanka's own infrastructure and climate-resilient building needs. Graduates from Moratuwa, Peradeniya, or Ruhuna civil programmes are strongly positioned. Sweden's 12-month post-study residence permit to seek work, plus the north's booming green-industrial construction demand, make LTU a strong, mid-cost route into international engineering careers.

Career Outcomes & PR
Sweden allows graduates up to 12 months to seek work after study, with a skilled-worker route to permanent residence. LTU civil-engineering graduates are recruited by Skanska, NCC, Sweco, WSP, LKAB, and the vast green-industrial construction projects across northern Sweden — or return to Sri Lanka's infrastructure and construction sectors with sustainable-building expertise. Civil and structural engineers are on Sweden's shortage-occupation list. Starting salaries run SEK 36,000-44,000/month.
