Master in Organic Agricultural Systems and Agroecology
BOKU University Vienna
Course Overview
BOKU University's Master programme in Organic Agricultural Systems and Agroecology is a four-semester, 120-ECTS degree taught in English. It examines the ecological, economic, political, cultural and production-related sides of sustainable farming: organic crop production, animal husbandry, food chains and the impact of EU agricultural policy. There are two tracks. AgrEco-Organic is studied entirely at BOKU in Vienna, with a profile in either Organic Agriculture or Agroecology. EUR-Organic is an international double degree in which you spend one year at a partner university in France, Germany, Poland, the Netherlands or Italy.
The programme is highly relevant to Sri Lanka, where smallholder farming, tea and spice exports, and debates about fertiliser use, soil health and food security make evidence-based sustainable agriculture a national priority. Agriculture graduates from Peradeniya, Ruhuna, Rajarata, Sabaragamuwa, Eastern and Wayamba universities are well matched. BOKU is one of Europe's leading life-sciences universities, and Austrian public-university tuition of about €727 per semester for non-EU students keeps the degree affordable, with Austria's 12-month job-seeker residence permit available after graduation.

Career Outcomes & PR
Austria grants non-EU graduates a 12-month residence permit to look for qualified work, which converts to a Red-White-Red Card or EU Blue Card once employed. Graduates of this programme work in research, consulting, development cooperation, organic-farming associations, the food industry and agricultural policy. Austria has one of the highest shares of organic farmland in the EU, and Vienna and Rome host relevant international organisations such as UNIDO and FAO. Sri Lankan returnees fit roles with the Department of Agriculture, the Tea Research Institute, export agribusinesses and organic-certification bodies, and with FAO, IFAD and development NGOs working on smallholder livelihoods.
