MSc Applied Geoinformatics
University of Salzburg
Course Overview
The Department of Geoinformatics at Salzburg — Z_GIS — is the largest GIS research group in the German-speaking world and a UNIGIS network founder, and the English-taught MSc Applied Geoinformatics is its flagship on-campus degree. The curriculum runs from spatial data science, remote sensing and Earth observation, and object-based image analysis, through geospatial web and cloud architectures, to applied domains: disaster risk, urban and regional planning, environmental monitoring and humanitarian mapping.
Two things make this unusually relevant from Sri Lanka. First, cost: as an Austrian public university, non-EU tuition is roughly €1,500 a year. Second, subject fit — Z_GIS works closely with Copernicus Emergency Management, Doctors Without Borders and humanitarian mapping programmes, and flood, landslide and coastal-change modelling are core teaching examples rather than footnotes. For anyone working on Sri Lankan disaster management, irrigation, urban planning or land administration, that is directly transferable machinery.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle Bachelor's degree (180 ECTS equivalent) in geography, geoinformatics, surveying, environmental science, computer science, civil engineering, planning or a related field.
- check_circle Evidence of prior GIS, remote sensing, statistics or programming exposure — the department assesses curriculum equivalence and can prescribe supplementary courses.
- check_circle Motivation letter naming your applied interest (disaster risk, urban analytics, Earth observation) and a CV.
- check_circle Certified degree certificate and transcripts with sworn translations; non-EU admission decisions take time, so submit early rather than at the September deadline.
- check_circle Student residence permit applied for at the Austrian embassy, with proof of roughly €13,000 in accessible funds for the year.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 Overall, or TOEFL iBT 87 Overall.
- check_circle Cambridge English C1 Advanced accepted.
- check_circle Waived if your Bachelor's was taught and assessed entirely in English — a Medium of Instruction letter from a Sri Lankan university is accepted.
- check_circle The degree is fully English-taught; German is not required, and free German courses are available.

Career Outcomes & PR
Geoinformatics is one of the few earth-science specialisations with a genuinely wide labour market: graduates go into GIS and remote-sensing roles at engineering and planning consultancies, Earth-observation companies working with Copernicus and Sentinel data, utilities and telecoms network planning, humanitarian and development agencies, and spatial data science roles in logistics and insurance. Austria's post-study job-search residence permit runs 12 months. In Sri Lanka the demand sits with the Survey Department, the Disaster Management Centre, the Urban Development Authority, the Mahaweli Authority and irrigation agencies, the Land Commissioner's department, and with GIZ, UNDP, ADB and World Bank projects on flood risk, coastal zone management and land administration.
